Halloween fiend looks scary & has given up on life - dad

Three months at Rikers Island have left accused Halloween sex fiend Peter Braunstein wishing he were dead, his heartbroken father revealed yesterday.
Braunstein's appearance is disturbing. The alleged pervert has grown a tangled beard and gnarly fingernails. He also has packed on the pounds since he was moved to Rikers from a Bellevue Hospital prison ward, his father said.

"He just wants to die," Alberto Braunstein, 70, said while visiting Rikers yesterday. "He said, 'I know by the time I get out of here, you'll be gone and my mother will be gone.'"

Peter Braunstein is accused of posing as a firefighter last Halloween to con his way into a former co-worker's Chelsea apartment. Once inside, he sexually assaulted and tortured the young woman, authorities said.

Braunstein, 41, eluded a manhunt for weeks until December, when he was cornered in Memphis and attempted to take his own life by stabbing himself in the neck.

He is charged with arson, kidnapping, burglary, robbery, sexual abuse and assault. His attorney is preparing a psychiatric defense.

After his capture, Braunstein repeatedly refused to speak with his father. But the elder Braunstein said that he and his son, a former freelance writer, have reconciled.

Alberto Braunstein revealed that he has mortgaged his Manhattan apartment to pay his son's legal bills. "We must do what we must do," he said. "If I have failed him in the past.... it's never too late to try to make it up."

He visits his son at Rikers every week, reminiscing about his childhood and urging him to remain hopeful.

Yesterday, Braunstein's father gave him the [highlight]World War II novel "The Unlikely Spy"[/highlight] and apprised him of World Cup soccer developments.

CREEPY CALLER: Peter Braunstein phoned and e-mailed threats
to three women in 2003 and 2004, prosecutors say.

November 10, 2006 -- Maniac molester Peter Braunstein threatened at least three other women involved in the fashion industry before he posed as a firefighter and sexually assaulted a former co-worker in her Chelsea apartment on Halloween 2005, new court documents claim.

Braunstein - a former Women's Wear Daily writer - left threatening phone messages and e-mails with the three women "upon being rejected on personal or business matters" during 2003 and 2004, according to the documents, filed yesterday by prosecutors in Manhattan criminal court.

In one case, the curly-haired creep even repeatedly rang the buzzer at the home of one of the victims, whom he threatened to ruin professionally, the papers stated.

The three women - whose identities were not revealed - came forward after the savage, 13-hour Halloween assault in 2005 made headlines and Braunstein, 42, embarked on a six-week, cross-country escapade to evade police.

The papers also revealed some of his alleged activity while on the lam, including excerpts from his journal in which he admitted robbing two men, and stealing bicycles, backpacks, cellphones and food.

In one episode - in which he has been charged in Ohio - Braunstein described picking Cincinnati psychiatrist Mark Cohen's name out of a phone book, staking out his office and posing as his next patient before barging into the doctor's office and declaring: "This is a robbery, doc!" He then bound Cohen with plastic cuffs - similar to the type used in the Chelsea assault - and made off with a measly $16.

In the journal, Braunstein admitted stealing backpacks from school campus libraries, a bicycle, canned goods and other provisions, and a cellphone - with which he made money by selling calls to others.

The papers also told how just days after the New York attack, Braunstein called the assistant of an ex-girlfriend whom he pleaded guilty to menacing in 2003 and said: "If you testify . . . you will die."

Prosecutors revealed the new details in an effort to convince a judge into letting jurors hear about the alleged acts, to reveal a pattern of conduct that would undermine his planned insanity defense.

Braunstein's attorney, Richard Gottlieb, dismissed the move.

"What is contained in the papers is replete with mischaracterization of fact and we will address those misleading statements in our papers," he said. "We are confident that the judge - after receiving our response and after hearing arguments - will deny this misguided attempt by the district attorney."
