Distraught Man Kills 4 And Self

INGLEWOOD — Authorities tried to determine today why an unemployed Lennox man reportedly upset over financial problems killed his sister-in- law, her husband and their two little girls before taking his own life.

The chain of events that culminated with the discovery of the bodies in a house at 3612 W. 110th St. in Inglewood began at about 5:30 a.m. yesterday with a woman calling the sheriff's department to report her husband had left their Lennox home -- upset over financial difficulties and armed with a handgun, authorities said.

The five bodies were found hours later, at about 1:40 p.m., after sheriff's deputies assigned to the Lennox Station spotted the missing man's car outside the 110th Street home, authorities said.

"They saw that the door was slightly open. Fearing that something was wrong inside, the deputies then made entry, and upon making entry they discovered five deceased persons they determined to be three adults and two children," said Inglewood police Lt. Mike McBride.

The two dead girls were aged 9 and 10, sheriff's Sgt. Gabriela Garcia told the Daily Breeze. The dead woman was reportedly the sister of the gunman's wife.

The victims were reported to have been found in their beds in different rooms in the house while the suspected gunman was found with what detectives believe was a self-inflicted gunshot.

Before entering the dwelling, law enforcement personnel surrounded the house, evacuated neighbors and tried to communicate with anyone who might be inside, including calling the home telephone number, which was disconnected, according to sheriff's department officials.

The alleged gunman was a 41-year-old man who lived just a mile from the house where the murder-suicide occurred, the Breeze reported. He leaves a wife and two teenage children, according to the newspaper.

Neighbors told the Breeze that the gunman's family lived in the back of a duplex on 104th Street and that he hadn't worked in a long time. They reported that a "for rent" sign was posted recently in front of the home.

"They were supposed to move out because she was the only one working," a 28-year-old waitress and full-time student who knew the gunman's family told the newspaper. "He didn't do nothing. He was a heavy guy. I think they were being asked to leave."

Raymundo Salgado, 49, told the Los Angeles Times he was watching television about 4 a.m. yesterday when he heard what sounded like four rapid shots. He said the fence abutting his home shook with the blasts.

"But you hear gunshots around here every day," Salgado told The Times, adding that he did not call authorities. "I never saw any arguing over there or heard of any problems."

Residents said the victims had moved into the Inglewood neighborhood in the area of Crenshaw Boulevard and Imperial Highway about a year ago and renovated yellow, 800-square-foot house.

Coroner's investigators picked up the bodies yesterday afternoon, and autopsies are scheduled over the next few days.
