Jobless refugee forced to sleep in car
18 September 2006
By KIM THOMAS
A Somali refugee has been living in his car for two months after being unable to get a house or a job in Christchurch.
Refugee Abdirashid Abdullahi's situation, while more extreme than many, mirrors the difficulties faced by immigrants to New Zealand.
They were outlined in a Massey University report released last week which found immigrant jobseekers were being discriminated against, particularly if they were thought to be Muslim.
Abdirashid Abdullahi told The Press through a translator that he came to Christchurch two months ago in the hope of securing work as a halal butcher.
People had told Abdullahi there was a lot of butchering work in the South Island.
However, unable to find a job or an affordable place to live, he said he was forced to sleep in his car.
On hearing about his predicament, Christchurch Muslim leaders allowed Abdullahi to park his vehicle in the mosque carpark rather than on the inner-city streets.
Abdullahi said he was on the waiting list for a Housing New Zealand home.
The 22-year-old said he came to New Zealand over two years ago as a refugee.
His parents were killed in the Somali civil war when he was seven.
Abdullahi said his uncle paid for him to come to New Zealand in 2004, where he was granted permanent residency.
Since arriving in the country, Abdullahi said he had worked as an orchard worker in the Hawkes Bay but this work had since dried up.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAbdullahi said because his grasp of English was poor, it was difficult for him to apply for jobs and houses, although he had been assisted by both the Muslim Association of Canterbury and Somalis living here.
"I feel neglected, forgotten, because I am forcing to live in my car."
The Massey University report found new immigrants were being discriminated against when looking for jobs, particularly if they are thought to be Muslim.
The report, Being Accepted: The Experience of Discrimination and Social Exclusion by Immigrants and Refugees in New Zealand, concluded many employers' attitudes were out of step with the realities of the rapidly increasing immigrant population and a shortage of workers.

In 2004 teen aged white uniformed school girls were raped by an African refugee in Christchurch. Another African at the time was in the jew media charged in Christchurch with beating his wife a second time, but was defended in court against deportation because he needed medical care he could not get in Afreaka. Thank you Mr. jew.
To any white on this forum. If you go to N.Z. and try to work, you will be arrested and jailed and then after a week or two of jail house food you will be deported to Hawaii.

I have no idea what your title means (preview and proof your posts before you submit and don't use local abbreviations). But for these fucking white leaders to let niggers into New Zealand is disgusting beyond words.

The story above says more New Zealander's are getting crazy, wonder why?
The story below is some real insanity. If your White, not rich, or in a specialty needed skill, etc., or get married, you are not getting in to N.Z. Christchurch had no non-Whites to speak of in 2000, now the city city has had assaults and there is now plenty of savages for your viewing and bus riding pleasure.

The Government is making it easier for Kiwis to bring in foreign partners and children.
From July next year, applications from the partners and dependent children of New Zealand citizens and residents will be taken out of Immigration New Zealand's family-sponsored stream and considered separately.

At present, the family stream is capped at about 15,000 people a year. More than half of those approved are the partners and children of New Zealanders and their applications are given priority.
The foreign parents, siblings and adult children of New Zealanders will continue to be considered through the family stream but the number of places available is likely to change.
The immigration system came under fire from former All Black Dean Kenny last year when his Welsh-born wife of nine years was declined New Zealand residency. They were told they had not provided enough proof of the relationship. She was later granted residency.
Immigration Minister David Cunliffe said residency would become automatic for foreign partners of New Zealanders, provided they met health and character requirements and could prove they had been in a genuine and stable relationship for at least a year.
The application process would be simpler for partners and children. Waiting times would also be reduced, because demand for places in the family stream had been exceeding the number available.
AdvertisementAdvertisementThe change was in line with Immigration's expatriate programme, designed to encourage Kiwis to come home.
Mr Cunliffe said an age limit of 55 had also been introduced for the siblings and adult children of New Zealanders. The family stream system was being reviewed and more announcements would be made this year.

New Kiwi to take wing for France
20 September 2006
ARWEN HANN
Christchurch's newest citizen is off to France to honour one of the city's war heroes.
Egyptian-born Amina Edris, 16, who became a New Zealand citizen yesterday, will travel to the French village of Yevres to take part in an annual memorial to Christchurch- born pilot Noel Stokes.
Yevres residents believe Stokes saved their village from disaster during World War 2 when he steered his stricken Lancaster bomber away from houses before it crashed, killing him.
Edris, a student at Christchurch Girls' High School, will take part in the ceremony and give a speech in French after winning an essay- writing competition run by the Christchurch Young Writers' School.
She will travel as a New Zealand citizen after getting her passport just days before she flies to Europe.
After difficulties getting the right documents for Edris to enter France on an Egyptian passport, the competition organisers approached the Ministry of Internal Affairs for help.
They agreed to fast-track her citizenship, which was awarded in a special ceremony at the ministry's Christchurch office yesterday morning.
"The French authorities were being really helpful but there were just some things we couldn't do in time so we approached the New Zealand authorities," competition organiser Glyn Strange said.
"It was a bit of a last-ditch attempt, but they were great, they have really helped us."
Edris is looking forward to representing her adopted country in Europe.
"It was a bit strange having the ceremony with just me and my parents. I was a bit homesick when I first came, but I love living in New Zealand now. We have been here nearly five years now. It is very different to Cairo, where I was brought up, but I like it."
Edris will also spend two weeks at a French school and will host French student Charlotte Chagnon in New Zealand in April to mark Anzac Day.
AdvertisementAdvertisement"I am looking forward to showing Charlotte New Zealand and taking her to places in Christchurch," Edris said.
"I haven't been to all the places yet, so it will be a great chance for me to explore as well."

NZ considers letting in 300 Afghan refugees
21 September 2006
New Zealand is considering opening the doors to 300 Afghan refugees who fled their homeland to India.
Labour Department refugee division director Kevin Third said two officials were heading to India on Friday to spend three weeks interviewing refugees who fled the Taleban regime.

The United Nations Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) referred the people after assessing them individually as genuine refugees.
Mr Third said there was no guarantee they would all be accepted. The UNHCR would need to provide comment about why they had been determined as refugees and why they needed the protection of another country.
"The refugees will also be individually assessed by the department to establish their identities and ensure their background and character is suitable for acceptance by New Zealand."
The refugees selected would be part of New Zealand's national quota of 750 UN mandate refugees a year.
They would start arriving early next year.

Sad and sickening is the thought of New Zealand opening up to muds. It's a tough country to migrate to for us...if you're over a certain age, you don't get in because of the 'drain' old people (past 50) make on social services. Also, I understand Auckland has a wave of polynesians flooding in. I think the whites are, as always, led by socialist do-gooders, but the Maoris aren't so happy to see foreigners come into 'their' country. New Zealand should be warned, that they could easily be swamped if the Indos or Chinese decide to move in. I believe a few years ago, their PM abolished the NZ navy in the reasoning that if things got bad, the Aussies would bail them out. I think NZ seems a happy, contented land, and I've always wanted to go there, but wonder if the Kiwis are perhaps too trusting...happy eloi waiting for the morlocks.
