Hillel Enriches Student Life on Campus
By Emma Boddorf, Staff Writer
Hillel is the foundation for Jewish campus life. Along with being actively involved on campus and holding more than four events each week, Hillel reaches out to the community and other religious groups on campus.
The mission of Hillel is to enrich the lives of Jewish students so that they can enrich others. Hillel is constantly growing and reaching out to attract support and new members.
“Hillel is much more active now than four years ago because there are more members and many more exciting programs,” said Hillel President Jackie Katz, a senior psychology major.
Each semester is filled with events. There is something different going on each week.
“We have weekly meetings, Shabbat services and dinners, weekly Israel chats, Midweek Midrash, Israeli dancing, holiday programs, social justice programs involving the situation in Darfur, bagel brunches and interfaith events,” said Katz.
The public relations chair for Hillel, Matt Averbach, a junior graphic design major, holds the weekly Israel chat program.
“I wanted to have Israel chats because I love Israel and love learning about the politics of the area,” said Averbach. “Each week we talk about the issues surrounding Israel and the news relating to Israel and the United States.”
