Community Honors Fallen Marine

April 20, 2006 – 6pm

Thursday in Hawkinsville, members of the community gathered to honor a former resident killed in the war in Iraq. 20-year-old Marine, Kun Y. Kim known as John, died along with two other marines April 2nd when a bomb exploded. John Kim went to Hawkinsville High School for two years. He graduated from an Atlanta high school. His funeral was held in Lilburn last Thursday, but Kim's parents still live in Hawkinsville.
The commander of the local V.F.W. says he organized the memorial service so the the family would know the community is standing behind them during their time of grief.

The American flag and the South Korean flag flew at half staff as several speakers talked about Kim's service in the Marines. Kim's father sat in front of the stage as people spoke of his son. Veterans and people from the community stood behind the elder Kim and prayed for his son and the family. V.F.W. Post Commander, Michael Sinyard, presented Kim with a proclamation dedicating April 20, 2006 to his son's memory. Sinyard said flags would fly at half staff in Hawkinsville until sunset Thursday.

MICHAEL SINYARD, VFW POST COMMANDER:
"It's a good feeling when you look around you and you feel the community rise up and pat you on the back, and say we're thankful that your son was able to give his life. We're sorry that was the price that now you have to bear."

Sinyard says John Kim is the first person to die from Pulaski County during the war in Iraq. He says he eventually hopes to build a monument at Veteran's Memorial Park honoring Kim and all of the other Georgia service men and women killed during the war in Iraq and Afghanistan.

I wasn't required to show up and salute. For some reason, my employers thought that they would tell the employees that it was required to show up, but they didn't actually enforce it.
