I think it goes back to 1920s Germany, were they had so much inflation that you needed a wheel barrow to buy a loaf of bread.

By the way, these metals nuts were right, if you would have bought gold and silver and mining stocks five years ago you would have realized a quite tidy return. Check out the prices over that time period.
