Been reading Gawker ring for a year. Far, far too often for it to be random or accidental are its sites' articles about holidays that are basically just open threads for people to bitch. And they always bitch about their racist relatives.
If a racist is someone who hates niggers, then a 'liberal' is someone who hates his own family. He hates his ancestors, his race, most of his own relatives.
Illiberals seem to be people who hate almost everyone in their own families and have some need to see themselves as both superior and unjustly put upon.
Good example in non-holiday story about mexes their battles with Arizonans:
ptarmigan @FlowbeeBryant
My fat, old, racist relatives from Chicago moved to Arizona after they retired. First thing out of their fat, old, racist mouths when I spoke to them right after they moved to Mesa was, "The Mexicans have just ruined this place."
Anyway, there's something there...I don't think I have my finger quite on it, but there's something there.
The book I've reread about postmodernism is by a christ nut. He keeps putting for the claim that basically men are more the same than different. If you reject christ-insanity, and say men are more different than alike, then it must be perpetual war, halitosis and other bad things. Classically christian way of arguing: no proof is advanced; rather they try to widen your eyes at the horror that will ensue if you don't take their position. Thus, their position is christ-lunacy is the only basis for effective communication and friendship and cooperation among the various types of men. And they've been testing their nostrum for 2,000 years but still can't draw the obvious conclusion.
But this is the basis of liberalism and thus the Enlightenment and the social do-gooding or Social Gospel that Protestantism evolved toward in the late 1800s.
The Gawker stuff is the secular-humanist version of this religious nuttery. Remember, it was jebus himself who said he came to set families against one another - throw everything aside and accept his doctrine. Very similar to this liberalism.
