One sometimes sees accounts of the contributions of Jews to humankind which are sometimes quite intriguing. One caught my attention recently, which is worth some perusal. It is by the celebrated Harvard Law School professor, Alan M. Dershowitz in his recent book The Vanishing American Jew. On p 54 he says

"What then, of the contributions of individual Jews to humankind? What would the world be like without a future

Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, Franz Kafka, Isaiah Berlin, Yitzhak Perlman, Ludwig Wittgenstein, Jonas Salk, Hienrich Heine, George Gershwin, Louis Brandeis, Gertude Stein, Simone Weil, Henri Bergson, Niels Bohr, Albert Sabin, Emma Goldman, Rosa Luxemburg, Marc Chagall, Camille Pissarro, Karl Marx, Nelly Sachs, Max Weber, Leonard Bernstein, Irving Berlin, Benjamin Disraeli, Emile Durkheim, Cesare Lombroso, Gustav Mahler, Arnold Shoenberg, Samuel Gompers, Marcel Proust, Claude Levi-Strauss, the Marx Brothers, Barbra Streisand, Sarah Bernhardt, Nadine Gordimer, Louise Nevelson, Steven Speilberg, Marcel Marceau, Sam Goldwyn, David Sarnoff."

I have partially annotated the list by using bold type to designate scientist and inventors, italic for political figures, and an underline for an artist/entertainer. There are 41 names represented in this list of Jewish heroes.

It is interesting to note, first of all, the large fraction, 24 out of 41, of the names that are artists and entertainers. Painters, singers and comedians predominate. Of the political figures he mentions, most were Marxists or Anarchists. Only two inventors are mentioned, both of whom are credited with the polio vaccine. Only two people mentioned, Einstein and Bohr, were physical scientists.

The other scientists were in the "soft sciences" of psychology and sociology whose theories are mostly discredited. For example, Lombroso tried to relate certain physical characteristics, such as jaw size, to criminal psychopathology, or the innate tendency of individuals toward sociopathy and criminal behavior. Freud was a cocaine addict who devised such discredited concepts as the Oedipus complex, castration anxiety, and the idea that little girls generally wish they had male parts.

Some of these men were, as we would say nowadays, ethically challenged. Sarnoff stole the credit for radio and TV from Armstrong and Farnsworth, respectively. He never invented anything but his persona. Einstein was a Zionist who hated Prussians and was a leader in the development of nuclear weapons. These were used to destroy two cities, and they may yet lead to the destruction of our civilization.

Remarkable is the fact that many of these people were only marginally Jews. Many were half-Jews or Christian converts. For example, Bohr's father was Aryan (Danish), Heine converted to christianity, Mahler converted to Catholicism, Disraeli was baptized into the Church of England, Proust's father was not Jewish and he was raised as a Catholic. Bergson was not a practicing Jew and Durkheim broke from Judaism. Bernhardt' father is unknown, and she was raised as a Christian.

All in all, this is a very curious list. I am unpersuaded that it demonstrates any great superiority of the Jewish race.

I was offended enough by this offering of Dershowtz, which clearly is intended to demonstrate his racial pride, and persuade others of Jewish superiority, to offer a counter-demonstration for the reader's consideration. I imagined writing a book, The Vanishing American White, that would include:

These are the inventors and scientists of the modern age. They devised the physics, mathematics and chemistry underpinning our understanding of the material world. They devised the science of genetics and molecular biology that generated our understanding of life itself. They discovered the sources of illness, and their prevention in humans. They made the revolutions in transportation, and in the transmission of information. They discovered the new materials that shape the things we use every day.

None of them are Jews.

They are heroes of our time.
