For those of you unfamiliar, Juneteenth (a one-word ebonics bastardization of the two words "June Nineteenth"), is an annual celebration of the events of June 19, 1865. On that date, the slaves in Galveston Texas received word of the emancipation proclamation, courtesy of Union General Gordon Granger and his federal troops. The proclomation's effective date was two and a half years earlier -- January 1, 1863. Around here, it is generally celbrated on the weekend following June 19th.
