Main defendant unexpectedly admits to pimping in human trafficking trial
The main defendant in an ongoing prostitution case unexpectedly admitted during a session at the Helsinki Court of Appeals that he had been involved in procurement. [color="Navy"]The man conceded that he had acted as a pimp for four Estonian women, and that he had made a profit of more than EUR 17,000 from the activities.
The 32-year-old man was sentenced by Helsinki District Court to five years imprisonment last summer for aggravated human trafficking and aggravated procurement. At that time he had denied the charges.
Charges stemming from the case have also been filed in Estonia. [color="navy"]According to the BNS news agency, prosecutors are calling for prison sentences against three men and two women for running brothel in Finland. Investigators say that the activities were partly led from inside an Estonian prison. One of the men is also being charged with coercing women into prostitution.
[color="navy"]The group is suspected of having transported 15 Estonian women to Helsinki and other parts of Southern Finland for purposes of prostitution. One of them was a young mentally disabled woman who was enticed to Finland with promises of love, and a job in child care.
In addition to the main defendant, Helsinki District Court [color="navy"]sentenced five men and one woman to prison terms for aggravated trafficking in humans. An eighth defendant was convicted of procurement. All appealed their sentences, but one of them cancelled the appeal after being released from prison.
The prosecution is pressing charges of aggravated human trafficking against all seven remaining defendants.
The 32-year-old main defendant is considered the leader of the group’s activities in Finland. [color="navy"]He has already served a prison term in a large drugs case. Police believe that he takes his orders from the real leaders of the group in Estonia.
