My point made, I took the title down. As far as the reaction of some of the old guard so to speak, even if I give the benefit of the doubt on the wisdom of "shock and puke", I'd have to defend the old guards' initial reaction on the simple grounds that a certain prior expectation wrt standards had been set on all VNN web sites both in stated policy (IIRC) and in practice over the past few years. IMO the key to getting along with just about anyone from your boss to your friend to your gf is paying attention to the expectations you set both implicitly and explicitly. It's acting in an unexpected way that will win you the harshest rebuke. A policy change is one thing, but how about a "heads up" before yanking the rug on your regular supporters? I know one person who is a regular well-known poster on this forum who used to set his browser's home page to VNN. He has a wife and a daughter. Another person told me that she brought up the web page right while biting into lunch and almost spit. I've advertised VNN to my brother, and I'd have been pissed if my sister-in-law had been looking over his shoulder and that happened to come up. Maybe the "Thus spake Zarathus-duh" types think this sort of treatment towards their friends and their family is somehow comical, but I personally think a gigantic "WTF" was well in order in response to the manner that the policy change was handled alone. Second quick thing no one has mentioned: VNN better carefully check US law on putting up hardcore porn without an enter/exit page in front. Thirdly, moving forward, as the brave NEW VNN begins, I have already expressed my reservations as best I could. Frankly I fear that the good people driven away will eventually be replaced by freaks. I think an approach more intelligent than idiotically slapping obscene crap onto the main page would have been to announce a new project with the specifc goal of designing flyers/graphics based on sexual jealousy in young adults, and that candidate designs could be as visceral and explicit as desired, so long as effective, without bounds. Internal review, discussion, and revisions could have followed to have refined the products. The final products could have easily been plastered all over the forums and blog spaces of the web by enthusiastic VNNers.
