Rare Nazi propaganda film found

IN BERLIN
A NAZI propaganda film showing dramatic footage of a Second World War battle against British forces has been found.

Kampf um Norwegen - or "the Struggle for Norway" - is a rare 80-minute documentary commissioned by the high command of the German army in 1940. It displays ordinary German soldiers as super-heroes as they conquered the country.

It is believed the film was dubbed into English to be screened in the then neutral US and distributed in Portugal, Spain and parts of Africa.

Associate Professor Jostein Saakvitne, at Bergen University College, found the film on sale in an internet auction.

Ragnar Løvberg, an archivist at the Norwegian Film Institute,

said: "The film contains a range of scenes that have never been made public before. A great deal of it is devoted to the Battle of Narvik against British forces."

Experts have yet to find other copies or further information about the film in Germany.

Prof Saakvitne added: "We don't know where the film came from, but there is every reason to believe it had lain forgotten in a loft or cellar."

Narvik was a key port for Swedish ore mines. During the battle, more than 1,000 men and three German destroyers were sunk by the Royal Navy and five were scuttled by their crews.

Norwegian, French, Polish and German forces also fought a two-month land campaign.

There must have been many copies of this film. That they all disappeared, bar one, shows how effective the censorship of the kikenvermin is.

It displays ordinary German soldiers as super-heroes as they conquered the country.

Nice find sean. I have heard of that battle before, but little of it is ever seen on history / documentary channels. [at least that I have noticed] I would really like to see it, it would be very interesting.

It may be online before you know it. Here are a few stills from the film and a couple of Jews working on it. However with Jews in charge of it I wouldn’t be so sure we will get a uncut version of the film.

Not only is the film a hitherto unknown revelation to Norwegian film and history experts, they have yet to find other copies or further information about the documentary in Germany.

Bergen University College expects a high-resolution digital copy from the Norwegian Film Institute, and the NFI hopes to have the original film restored. The original will be stored in the National Library's archives in Mo i Rana.

Saakvitne believes that the costly propaganda film was likely aimed at German cinema audiences.

"The story is based on German forces coming and freeing Norway from an Allied threat of invasion. It is strange that we have not known about this film earlier. No one we have contacted knows it," Saakvitne said.

"This must be due to only a few copies being made and it being destroyed during the war. Germany had trouble towards the end of the war and many film archives were burned, and that makes it difficult to get an overview of what documentary films were made during this period," Saakvitne said.
