But I've been practicing karate and kungfu for forty years so I have an advantage over only one or two or three at a time. To realistically prepare yourself for these kinds of confrontations I highly reccommend martial arts training that has a good dose of full-contact sparring. Boxing, and kick-boxing come to mind, as well as the styles that involve grappling.
Intense conditioning workouts, combined with sparring live opponents will also give you the confidence and mental mindset to effectively handle threatening, aggressive scumbags.
After you've sparred with numerous different opponents, you will not be paralyzed with worry about getting hit, or an opponent's physical size, in a street encounter -you will simply react to the threat. You will immediatley launch into action: strike, block and avoid blows, move, and counterstrike.
You'll become like a machine, and your fear will become channeled and controlled, where it works for you, helps you . Controlled adrenalin.

Yup, it's kind of odd that the same physical response that is supposed to save you ends up paralyzing most people. My theory is that we are simply so unused to this rush of adrenalin that we freak out when it happens and have no idea what to do.

I've found each succesful time I get into a situation where my adrenaline starts pumping it gets easier and easier to control. The key is realizing that it's a natural response to the situation you are in and then using it to your advantage.

Yeah, Mexicans, too. Every Mexican carries a knife because they are a knife-culture and a part of their "machismo". Even a small knife can cut you badly. But then, I carry a knife, too, a nice lockback as well as my trusty Swiss Army knife. With the Swiss knife, either the awl or the cork screw opens out and fits nicely through the second and third fingers of my closed fist -- nasty punch there, pokes a hole in anything.
