People were brainwashed to believe that diamonds, gold and other supposedly precious stones and metals are worth much more than they really are. I think this, in combination with other mass brainwashing, has led to a multitude of problems.
Is 1kg=2.2lb of gold, about 4 cubic cm or 1.5 cubic inch really worth over $55,000 (http://www.24hgold.com/english/gold_silver_prices_charts.aspx?money=USD)? Consider a decent wage of $30/hr. Is 1kg of gold really worth over 1800 man hours? Diamonds are (over) priced even higher per weight than gold.
