Missourian arrested at protest

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — Police arrested a rally organizer from Kirksville, Mo., after he fought with officers during a racially charged protest over the killing of a Knoxville couple.

Alex Linder ignored orders from police and fought with officers during the rally in Knoxville on Saturday, said Police Chief Sterling P. Owen IV. He faces charges of disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, vandalism and assault on a police officer.

Linder is the operator of the white supremacist and anti-Semitic Vanguard News Network website.

He was holding a sign in an area that police had blocked off to pedestrians. He ended up on the pavement after struggling with officers. Linder was the only one arrested during the event, which organizers promoted as a "rally against genocide," referring to the murders of Channon Christian and Christopher Newsom in January.
More than 200 Knoxville police officers, along with 100 county deputies, Tennessee Highway Patrol troopers and federal agents monitored the rally, which included fewer than 30 protesters and twice as many counterprotesters.

"It was fairly orderly," the chief said. "That doesn't mean we wanted them here in the first place."

The parents of Christian, a University of Tennessee student, have said they have no sympathy for extremists who want to use the racial aspects of the case for their own purposes.

The victims were white; the five suspects charged in the case are black.

Members of the Knoxville branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People showed up to protest the rally.

"This has nothing to do with the lives that were lost," said the Rev. Ezra Maize, president of the branch. "I think it's all a little ridiculous, but you can't argue with freedom of speech."
