"Sleeper effect" of cigarettes can last for years

LONDON (Reuters) - Trying just one cigarette may not be so harmless for non-smokers after all.

Scientists have discovered that a single cigarette has a "sleeper effect" that can increase a person's vulnerability for three years or more to becoming a regular smoker.

"We know that progression from experimenting with one cigarette to being a smoker can take several years," said Jennifer Fidler of University College London.

"But for the first time we've shown that there may be a period of dormancy between trying cigarettes and becoming a regular smoker -- a 'sleeper effect' or vulnerability to nicotine addition," she added.

Fidler and her team analyzed the impact of smoking a single cigarette on more than 2,000 children aged between 11 and 16 over five years.

It's my opinion most cigarette smokers are the absolute scum of the earth.

Sean,

Why do you start threads that have NOTHING to do with WNism?

1. For your amusement
2. Because a lot of WN’s will wreck their health and won’t survive the crash
3. Because growing tobacco is an almost 100% white business

Take your pick.

Sketchy science.

Trying a cigarette might be more indicative of an ingrained personality type rather than have anything to do with nicotine. Though it's not entirely out of the question that a single exposure to nicotine could alter the brain pathways, I'd like to see some evidence.

This could really just be a case of people being what they are... that is, the same factor which makes people likely to become smokers was also responsible for them trying the cigarette as a kid (risk-seeking and stimulation).

I'd wager you could show that people who smoke regularly are also at a higher risk of forming a meth habit, but I wouldn't blame the cigarettes for that. It's more likely a person is inclined towards stimulant addiction as a whole (driving fast, smoking, rollercoasters, cocaine, coffee, adrenaline, etcetera).

I like thrill seeking things like fast driving, martial arts, and climbing mountains in a 4-wheel drive. However I detest things like tobacco, coffee and drugs of any kind. The closest I come to a simulated stimulate is a soda every once in a while. Other than that I drink water or sports drinks.

People in my family have histories of addictions and such. I guess I took the best way out by thrill seeking instead of getting a thrill out of a bottle or pack of cigarettes.

I believe that there are certain personalities that are addicted to addictions. They will stop one addiction with another. But they have to be addicted to something.

SDM:

It sounds like you've made wise decisions. I've got a friend who easily becomes addicted to most things. For quite a while he drank heavily, got high, and smoked nonstop. He's also got a pretty bad driving history, with plenty of speeding tickets and a DUI or two. I think he has started to mature somewhat and so now has tempered his driving, cut back on the drinking, and stayed off the grass, but the cigarette smoking persists. It's been reckoned that cigarettes are more addictive than even heroine.

Personally, I probably have the least addictive personality possible. Or, as they say, "It's easy to quit. I've done it lots of times!" Cigarettes I find disgusting and I fail to understand how anyone can smoke them. Only when pretty drunk can I manage to enjoy them, which is rare nowadays. Generally I couldn't afford to drink even if I wanted to.

I have found myself developing a physical addiction to coffee as of late, which can be explained by my recent habit of drinking about a pot a day in a five hour time period while at work or the like (I know for some people that's not much coffee). It's the first physical addiction I've ever had, but I don't think it'd be too difficult to break at the moment. For the time being I have little intention of stopping the coffee intake.

SMG:

Love has a pretty close relationship to drugs. The brain creates phenylethylamine (PEA) during the first stages of attraction to someone. This chemical is a close cousin of amphetamine. Later on during a relationship a slow and steady release of oxytocin occurs and this has properties similar to opiates like codeine and heroin. Oxytocin is sometimes called the "hug drug" or "cuddle chemical" and is found in a high abundance in old couples and mothers after having babies. It's useful in prolonging human relationships.

Moving into speculative thought, I wonder if there's a specific chemical related to anger and hatred. I'm not aware of one, and it's probably related more to an absence of something (such as serotonin or dopamine) rather than a presence.
