Wealthy donors debate Republican ‘rebrand’

Advisers to Sheldon Adelson and Steve Wynn, the Las Vegas casino billionaires who were once known for their bitter rivalry, are in talks to work together on an effort to “rebrand” the Republican party in the US after the 2012 election loss.

A person close to Mr Adelson, who was the most high-profile conservative donor of the 2012 election cycle, said political advisers to both men had “very informal conversations” about combining forces ahead of the 2014 congressional elections.

Although senior aides were driving the effort, another person added, it was with the blessing of the executives. It was described as part of an effort to regroup after President Barack Obama’s re-election and Republicans’ failure to win back the majority in the Senate, a fact that many in Washington blame on the poor quality of some Republican candidates.
