The Rev. Fred Phelps, founder of Westboro Baptist Church in, Topeka, Kan., contends that American soldiers are being killed in Iraq as vengeance from God for protecting a country that harbors gays. The church, which is not affiliated with a larger denomination, is made up mostly of Phelps' children, grandchildren and in-laws.

The church members carried signs and shouted things such as "God hates fags" and "God hates you."

About 10 church members protested near Smyrna United Methodist Church and nearly 20 stood outside the National Guard Armory in Ashland City. Members have demonstrated at other soldier funerals across the nation.

The funerals were for Staff Sgt. Asbury Fred Hawn II, 35, in Smyrna and Spc. Gary Reese Jr., 22, in Ashland City. Both were members of the Tennessee National Guard.

Hundreds of Smyrna and Ashland City residents and families of other soldiers turned out at both sites to counter the message the Westboro Baptist members brought.

So many counterdemonstrators were gathered in Ashland City that police, sheriff's deputies and state troopers were brought in to control traffic and protect the protesters.

The church members held protesting permits, and counterprotesters in Smyrna turned their backs to Westboro Baptist members until time expired on the protest permits.

"If they were protesting the government, I might even join them," Danny Cotton, 56, said amid cries of "get out of our town" and "get out of our country."

he is very funny in a ridiculous clown sort of way. I don't think anyone, besides the "gay rights" crowd, who must secretly love him, takes him too seriously. Protesting at the funerals of dead soldiers, among other things, may get you noticed, but not at all in a positive way.

I read this article, and I am not too impressed with this so-called church or its reverend. We have enough problems communicating with our people. Cheapening the deaths of fallen American soldiers this way in order to make a political point is not wise. We should avoid this person Phelps like the bubonic plague.

Heh, always fun seeing him go after "gay-rights" events/activists. But jumping on every event that occurs and twisting it into his own warped rhetoric, is just plain stupid. That, and his claim that the entire country of Sweden is "irreversibly hellbound"

He is a crazy old coot that has developed a cult status regardless of his sometimes-insane behavior. If a racist had his passion for a positive message that was a bit more level headed he could do some serious damage to the Jews.

Crazy or not we should respect the mans drive and passion about that subject. If every VNNF’er was as passionate about exposing the Jew we could win a revolution. Fred has devoted his life and all of his energy in one subject. We need people in various areas with the same drive and passion for their race.

I'm always suss about how much Fred Phelps really hates homosexuals when he's as scatological-minded as he is. Maybe he does hate homosexuals, and also likes excrement? Hey, nowhere does it say that a 'Christian' can't be a 'deviant' as well, I suppose, but he could at least be honest about what turns him on if he's going to pontificate on the subject.

How many of you would have the brass to stand in public unarmed and protected and hold up offensive signs like this?

He is a balsy old fart, :box: no doubt about that. And for that, of course he deserves some respect. But to do such things, for instance, as hold up signs in protest outside Shephard's funeral, saying that he is burning in hell,etc when there is coverage all over the jewsmedia about this "terrible" anti-gay "hate crime. And every fool is being "instructed" on why they need to feel "sad" and "outraged" by this, really only strengthens the fags and their agenda. Not only can they keep on talking about this "anti-gay" hate crime, but now they have an "evil homophobic, crazy old man" that they can point to as an example of just one of the many reasons the poor persecuted homos need special rights and protections. Though as someone else said, his antics are very amusing, there are more effective ways he could go about this without adding even more fuel to the gay-rights agenda.

this is all too correct. One of the first things that made me start to not like the guy anymore. So he hates the sodomites, but loves the niggers.

I knew all that, I never thought he was great and don’t consider him a Christian. Actually I probably wouldn’t want to be in the same room with him. However I give the devil his due, the man is one of the most tenacious people there are when it comes to a cause. No matter what I think of him personally I still admire his dedication even if somewhat misplaced. Because he is pro-black doesn’t mean he doesn’t have his uses.

Even the atheist can be a tool when fighting the Jew, so this guy can be a tool when fighting the homos.
