I can't wait to see The Merchant of Venice, the movie!
I saw something bitching about that somewhere, forget where.
Note that "People I Know" is now in stores. They're now about 1/2 and 1/2 VHS and DVD at Kirksville's Movie Gallery.
I wouldn't hold my breath.
"The casting of Al Pacino as Shylock is the film's talking point, and it turns out to be an excellent choice. All eyes and ears, his Shylock scours the Rialto for his next deal, is over-protective of his daughter, and sees perfect sense in both his gruesome bond and his eventual claim upon it. This is a restrained, lucid and utterly compelling performance which leads the audience to have nothing but sympathy for the maligned Jew."

The first time we see Shylock he is spat upon by the merchant of the play's title before returning to his segregated Jewish ghetto
"To speak his thoughts is every freeman's right, in peace and war, in council and in fight."

"The very aim and end of our institutions is just this: that we may think what we like and say what we think."

I had a thread about this flick a couple months ago...

That's odd. It's about 90% DVD around here. And you never see anyone in the VHS section. It stands to reason when you can get a DVD player for 50 bucks.
BTW, I didn't think "People I Know" was as illuminating as others have thought. If I weren't jew-wise I probably wouldn't have noticed the jewishness of the "bad guys" in the film. It was also not made clear that he was assassinated at the end by a Mossad agent, even though "we" picked up on it.
