The passenger pigeon was a common bird in the Americas up until the end of the 19th century. The flocks would literally cover the sky and even take hours to pass you overhead. Their population estimated into the billions, maybe even as much as 5 billion of these bird inhabited North America at one point. If the year was 1880, you would be shocked to learn that in a 20 year span this species would be extinct.

But they were not bred on farms like chickens or cows. We simply went to the fields during breeding season and hunted them to extinction.
