My post below was originally on a thread that unfortunately got derailed by a moronic flame war. I think that the subject of the post, the status of women in moslem nations, deserves serious discussion and so I have re-posted it here in a new thread.

Burrhus: I spent 3 weeks in Morocco a few years ago. I travel more as an anthropologist than as a sight-seeing tourist. I spend my time talking to people and observing their behavior. In Morocco I was even invited into people's homes.

From my observations and conversations it was very clear to me that the women in that that moslem nation were not oppressed. In fact it was obvious to me that they were happier than the men. They still had their traditional activities of child, home and family care to occupy themselves with and maintain their self-esteem. The men on the other hand seemed quite depressed as there was wide-spread un-employment and the men spent there time in cafes drinking mint tea and watching soccer on tv.

While it would be incorrect to generalize from my experience in Morocco about the status of women in all moslem nations, it is obviously incorrect to generalize about women in all moslem nations given that the generalization does not hold true in Morocco.

In the 9 years that I was employed in a public high-school in Chicago, I had a lot of contact with moslem girls from Pakistan, India, the Middle-East and the Balkans. I found no evidence from conversations with them of dis-satisfaction with their status as moslem women. In fact, they were quite content with their feminine roles within a moslem cultural context and had a very negative opinion of the status of the non-moslem women in America.

I suspect that the negative reports on sex relations in moslem nations are either false propaganda put out to inflame anti-islamic emotions in Western liberals or they are the results of Western liberal interference in moslem cultures which create problems between the men and women in those nations.

While I am not necessarily approving in toto the cultural norms of moslem sex relations nor advocating their adoption in Western culture, I do believe that those relations have been falsely represented in the West and that there is some value in studying them honestly in search of some insight into the disastrous condition of sex relations in our own cultures.

Given that the moslem nations are reproducing (births) at a greater than replacement rate and that their cultures are spreading successfully into Western nations, it seems naive to me to believe that such a key element in any culture as sex relations is flawed in the moslem nations while the white nations of the West are in population decline and cultural disintegration.
