There's a way to get around the whole taken at night by complete surprise bit, at least so that you take away much of the initiative from the home invader. If you can afford a decent weapon to resist with, and you're serious about home security anyways, you can always reinforce your door frames, get a decent heavy door with deadbolts, as well as one of those wrought iron gate/doors for outside of that. Sure, they can still come in the windows, but there are ways around THAT, as well. Anyone ever think about caltrops? Hell, you could probably make your own with long nails if you know how to weld. Ever think about plexiglass windows? Pretty hard to break. Some plexiglass goes pretty cheap, too. They could be knockin on your windows and breaking down your door for upwards of a minute depending on what they bring, which would give you time to react.

Check into various home security items. There is everything from motion sensors for the driveway to actual physical obstacles to get in the way. A lot of these measures are actually quite affordable. I couldn't tell you just how much reinforcing your entryways would be, though.

Like it's been said, this really doesn't change much. Don't think for one second you'd recieve any fair treatment from the system if they set their sights on you.
