President Donald Trump just said the US will place “large sanctions” on Turkey for detaining an American pastor for nearly two years — a move that could seriously ramp up tensions between the two NATO allies.

The pastor, Andrew Brunson, is originally from North Carolina but has lived in Turkey for more than 20 years. Turkish authorities detained him on October 7, 2016, claiming that he was a spy and had connections to a terrorist group. The US expected him to be released on July 18, but on Wednesday, Turkish officials moved Brunson due to health concerns and kept him under house arrest. The charges he’s facing mean he could spend the rest of his life in prison.

Trump has repeatedly called Brunson a “great Christian” and expressed his displeasure over the pastor’s detainment for months, but hadn’t taken significant action before Thursday. It’s unclear, though, why Trump decided to escalate this issue now, or what the sanctions he promised to impose might look like.

Is there some kinda geopolitical shift happening in Turkey? They seem to be challenging the USA, and Israel, as well as becoming closer to the Russians.

There might be a little more to that failed coup that happened in Turkey, than the media is leading on. Post failed-coup, Erdogan appears to have taken a more hostile stance against the USA and Israel. This hints to me that Erdogan is aware that US and Israeli assets were involved in the coup attempt against him, and now he's got an ax to grind. I can't really see any other reason for the increased hostilities, if it's anything other than this. And the fact that the USA is giving protection to the one who Erdogan claims is responsible, further hints to US involvement in the coup attempt. Erdogan is essentially demanding the USA give up one of their own operatives.

What I'm really hoping happens here, is that (((they))) alienate a powerful country, and push them into the anti-Zionist coalition, which includes Russia, Iran, Lebanon, Syria. Further strengthening the enemies of Zionist hegemony. And placing yet another enemy within proximity to Israel's borders.
