Magnus Carlsen breaks Garry Kasparov's global ranking record

In the FIDE rating list the grandmaster continues to be confidently in the lead with 2861 points.

The previous record was dated 1999, when Kasparov scored a 2851 score.

In second place in the ranking is Russian Vladimir Kramnik, with Levon Aronian of Armenia closing out the top three.

On 26 April 2004 Carlsen became a Grandmaster at the age of 13 years, 148 days, making him the third-youngest Grandmaster in history (and second-youngest at that time). On the November 2009 FIDE rating list, Carlsen had an Elo rating of 2801, thus becoming the fifth player to achieve a rating over 2800 – and aged 18 years, 336 days at the time, by far the youngest to do so. On 1 January 2010 a new FIDE rating list was published, and at the age of 19 years, 32 days, he became the youngest chess player in history to be ranked world number one
