Police say Bergen woman beaten, strangled in Hudson hotel

Jennifer Moore was scared and alone, walking through the pre-dawn quiet of Manhattan's West Side with no money and no way back to Harrington Park when, police say, she crossed paths with Draymond Coleman.

But Coleman was no savior to the intoxicated 18-year-old, they said. An ex-convict whose own mother says he lusts after crack cocaine, Coleman brought Moore back to his Weehawken hotel room. There, sometime after 5 a.m. Tuesday, he beat and strangled her, authorities said.

Coleman, 34, was being held in New York on Thursday night awaiting extradition to Hudson County, where authorities said he will face a murder charge.

Police discovered Moore's body at 4:30 a.m. Thursday, stuffed into in a trash bin behind a West New York high-rise two blocks from the hotel. They were led there by Coleman's ex-girlfriend, who told them the body was there since Tuesday, a source close to the investigation said.

"This is the worst nightmare for a parent," Hugh Moore, the young woman's father, said outside the family's Martin Drive home (audio). "No one should lose a child. All the friends and everybody feel they could have done something different. But you work through it and put your life back together."

The night she disappeared, Moore and a friend, 18-year-old Talia Keenan, partied at Guest House, a Chelsea hot spot known for its celebrity clientele. Although underage, the pair apparently drank at the swanky ultra-lounge until at least 2 a.m.

After discovering that Keenan's car had been towed, the pair trekked several blocks to the city's massive impound yard, at 38th Street and 12th Avenue. But police said authorities there refused to release the car to the inebriated teens.

While at the yard, Keenan became ill and workers called an ambulance. The tow yard operator later told police that Moore stumbled out of the facility and north up the West Side Highway. Around 5 a.m., she called her boyfriend of four years, Kofi Boakye, 18, of Alpine.

Moore told Boakye that a man was following her and that she was lost. He told police he suggested she jump into a taxi. He said he tried calling her back a short time later, but she didn't answer. Within hours, Moore's parents reported her missing.

A short time after Moore's call, Coleman placed a call of his own -- to his mother.

"He just called me and asked for his ex-girlfriend's number," said Giselda Wright, who lives uptown.

Coleman apparently made the call to his mother and ex-girlfriend using Moore's cellphone, a law enforcement source close to the case said Thursday.

By Wednesday evening, police were at Wright's door.

"They didn't tell me why -- just said they wanted to talk to him," she said.

Wright said she's not close with her son, who she said grew up in Brooklyn, lives in hotels, and has a drug problem. "Crack," she said.

Investigators also traced the other call to the ex-girlfriend, the source said. She was taken into custody and, under questioning, told police that Coleman killed Moore, the source said. It wasn't clear Thursday what role, if any, the woman played in Moore's death.

Authorities said Coleman killed Moore in Room 37 of the Park Avenue Hotel, a five-story turn-of-the-century, brick building at Park Avenue and 48th Street in Weehawken. One of the 42 sparsely decorated rooms at the hotel runs about $300 a week.

A detective at the hotel Thursday afternoon said it was apparent that Moore put up a fight. The scene inside the room was so gruesome, he said, that he passed on viewing the body.

Coleman has been in and out of prison since 1997, a spokeswoman for the New York State Department of Corrections said. He was sentenced in December 1997 to three to six years for attempted drug distribution, which he served until June 2002. He violated parole three times -- in September 2002, July 2003 and January 2005 -- and was sent back to prison.

His last parole violation occurred on Jan. 11, 2005, the spokeswoman said. Prison officials were forced to release him two weeks later when his original sentence was completed, she said.

In November 2001, Coleman was disciplined for violent conduct and assaulting an inmate, she said.

Grief-stricken friends

As Moore's parents and siblings tried to come to terms with the loss of the spunky soccer star Thursday afternoon, her two best friends sat on "Jen's" bed in her home. The room was filled with Moore's clothes and cardboard cutout memorabilia of her two favorite shows, "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Angel."

Moore, Candice Strongwater, 18, and Austin Sandhaus, 17, were inseparable. Through tears, the girls recalled their times together at Saddle River Day School and also the night Moore disappeared.

"We had dinner in the Meatpacking District about 10 p.m. before she went out," said Strongwater, of Englewood. "She brought me home and we hung out for a little bit at my house."

Moore went back to Manhattan after midnight, and left her car behind at the Strongwater home, she said. Strongwater didn't accompany Moore because she had a curfew and was baby-sitting Tuesday.

"I wish I would have gone with her, because things would have gone a lot different that night," she said.

Sandhaus, of Palisades, N.Y., had gone into Manhattan plenty of times with Moore and others, she said. But she opted out this time because she wasn't close to Keenan.

"Jen text'ed me, but I decided we'd go our separate ways," Sandhaus said. "I didn't text her back."

What the teens will remember most is Moore's passion for soccer -- she was captain of the school team -- and how the headmaster there couldn't differentiate Jen from Candice from Austin.

"He would always see us together and confuse all three of us," Sandhaus said. "She was a small girl but so full of energy. She was always laughing. I'd say stupid stuff and she'd just laugh. And that laugh was so contagious. We miss her a lot."

Moore was enrolled at the University of Hartford this fall, her father said.

"She was a wonderful child, someone with a lust for life and she enjoyed every minute of life," he said Thursday morning. "It was the wrong thing, wrong place and the wrong time. It could happen to anybody. Once in a while something terrible is going to happen, and this is one of those times."

Coleman, according to police, was that something terrible.

Hotel resident Antonio Hernandez said Coleman was on the prowl for group sex and regularly asked whether he knew any women who would join him and his girlfriend.

"He asked me if my lady was into that and interested, and I said 'No way.' He said he was going to go to New York to try to find a girl," Hernandez said. "He also wanted crack cocaine, but I said I didn't know about that stuff."

Hernandez said he last saw Coleman about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday lugging a large garbage bag over his shoulder. "He said, 'I'm getting out of here,' " Hernandez said.

Coleman, whom he described as tall -- about 6 feet 2 inches, muscular and dark-skinned -- then returned to pick up a large duffel bag and suitcase, Hernandez said.

"All the bags were very big," he said.

Hernandez also said he noticed this week that the Coleman's hands were bruised and swollen.

"He said he got into a fight with some kids in New York," he said. "He said he started it."

Probe at building

In the parking lot behind Park View Towers on Thursday afternoon, a detective stood on top of the large green trash bin where Moore's body was found. A security camera faces the trash bin, where all the garbage had been emptied out and piled in the parking lot.

Residents leaned over their balconies, watching and shaking their heads.

On 50th Street, behind the apartment building, an officer sectioned off part of the sidewalk and covered what looked to be blood with two large garbage cans. Outside the hotel, a detective pulled a large section of brown hair from a trash bag.

Hugh Moore described his daughter as a "wonderful kid" who woke up in the morning with 15 different ideas in her head. "If you didn't have anything to do, she'd give you an assignment."

His daughter's friends have expressed regret that they didn't do more for Jennifer that night -- but he said their feelings are unfounded.

"We hope her friends don't blame themselves for something they think they could have done," he said. "She had wonderful friends, and they are all absolutely beside themselves."

Moore said he didn't allow his daughter to go to nightclubs. She would have been punished if she arrived home drunk, he said.

"At this point, I feel like I'm being punched in the stomach and I can't breathe," he said.
