A Jewish woman and her partner were among the the first same-sex couple ever to be officially married in Britain on Saturday, after a law authorizing same-sex marriages went into effect throughout the country.

Twenty-nine-year-old Nikki Pettit, who is Jewish, married Tania Ward, 28, in a Jewish ceremony in Brighton, on Britain’s south coast.

Ward, a pastry chef, first met Pettit, a childcare worker on a blind date six years ago. They were one of many gay couples in England and Wales said “I do” Saturday as a law authorizing same-sex marriage came into effect at midnight, the final stage in a long fight for equality.

Following the first marriages amid a supposed race to wed, Prime Minister David Cameron tweeted: “Congratulations to all same-sex couples getting married today — I wish you every possible happiness for the future.”

The Conservative party leader also described the change as an “important moment for our country,” and a rainbow flag flew above government offices in London in celebration.

“It is important for us to have the same title as a heterosexual couple,” Ward, who also identifies as Jewish, was quoted by the Daily Mail as saying. “The way the law was before, it just emphasized the difference of having a civil partnership.”

“Liberal Judaism is delighted to be correcting an injustice,” said Rabbi Danny Rich, chief executive of Liberal Judaism in the UK.

LONDON — Britain’s summer Pride season — the gay community’s annual chance to marry partying and politics — is now in full swing. This year’s festivities, though, have an added significance as the country marks the 50th anniversary of the decriminalization of male homosexuality.

The event is being widely commemorated: the BBC is screening a series of programs; Prime Minister Theresa May last week held a reception at Downing Street where she acknowledged both her own and her party’s somewhat mixed record on gay rights; and special events and exhibitions are being held across the country. Even the somewhat conventional and conservative National Trust is lending a hand.

When the Homosexual Law Reform Bill finished its tortuous passage through parliament in July of 1967, it marked the beginning of the end of the persecution of gay men by the British state. On this foundation were built the huge achievements of the past two decades — which swept away discriminatory laws, allowed gay men and women to serve in the military, and introduced civil partnerships and equal marriage.

The bill’s author and dogged champion was Leo Abse, a colorful Jewish MP who represented the South Wales mining constituency of Pontypool.

The New York Times on Tuesday quoted her second wife, Judith Kasen-Windsor, as confirming her death.

In 2009, Windsor was denied a spouse’s exemption and forced to pay federal taxes on the estate of her late wife, Thea Spyer, who also was Jewish, although their Canadian marriage was recognized as legal by the State of New York, where they resided. She pursued her case all the way to the Supreme Court, and in a narrow ruling in 2013, the court decided that the federal government must abide by the laws of individual states in its dealings with couples from those states.

That set the stage for a ruling two years later that removed all barriers to equal marriage rights.
