FALANGISM - José Antonio Primo de Rivera
FALANGISM
I SPAIN
The Spanish Falangist firmly believes in Spain. Spain is NOT a mere theory. Nor a collection of men and women. Spain is, above all, a UNIQUE DESTINY. A historical reality.
It is an essence, a truth in itself, which has known how to fulfill - and must continue to fulfill - universal missions.
Therefore, Spain exists: as something INCOMPREHENSIBLE to any individual, class, or group that composes it; as something SUPERIOR to those individuals, classes, or groups, and even to all of them together.
Therefore, Spain, which exists as a SUPERIOR AND INCOMPREHENSIBLE REALITY, must have its OWN GOALS. They are the following: the survival of its own unity, the resurrection of its inner strength, and a superior participation in the world's spiritual endeavors.
II THE DISSECTION OF SPAIN
In order to achieve these goals, Spain faces great obstacles. It is divided:
By local separatisms, by rivalries between political parties, and by class struggle.
Separatism does not understand or ignores the reality of Spain. It does not know that Spain is, above all, one great UNIQUE DESTINY. The separatists are distinguished by whether they speak the same language, whether they have the same racial characteristics, whether their province has its own climate, or a special topographical physiognomy.
But, it must be repeated again and again, a nation is not defined by the same language, nor by the same race, nor by the same territory. It is defined by the UNIQUE DESTINY ON A UNIVERSAL PLAN. That unique destiny has always been and is called Spain. Under the sign of Spain, the peoples that make it up have fulfilled their destiny - united on a common plane. Nothing can justify the breaking up of that magnificent community, the creator of one world.
Political parties ignore the uniqueness of Spain because they view it from the perspective of PARTIAL interest. Some stand on the RIGHT. Others stand on the LEFT. To stand in front of Spain like that means to distort the truth about it. It is as if we were to view it with our right eye squinting only or our left eye only. Beautiful and magnificent works are not viewed like that, but only and only: WITH EYES WIDE OPEN. Not from a PARTIAL, PARTY point of view that as such distorts the object of observation. But from a TOTAL, PATRIOTIC, point of view that encompasses the whole and corrects the shortcomings of our image.
The class struggle ignores the unity of the Fatherland, because it shatters the idea of NATIONAL PRODUCTION as a whole. The employers are intent on gaining as much as possible through struggle. The workers, too. And they tyrannize each other alternately. In periods of economic crisis, the employers exploit the workers. In periods of economic growth, or when the workers' organizations are very strong, the workers exploit the employers. Neither the workers nor the employers see the truth: both are collaborators in the common process of NATIONAL PRODUCTION. Having lost sight of national production, and thinking only of the interest or ambition of their own class, both employers and workers will eventually end in self-destruction and ruin.
III PATH OF HEALING
If struggle and decadence have led to the loss of the eternal idea of Spain, the cure will be the restoration of that idea. We must see Spain again as a reality that exists by itself.
Superior to the differences between nations. And to the conflicts between parties. And to the struggle between classes. Whoever does not lose sight of the fact of the superior reality of Spain clearly sees all political problems,
IV THE STATE
Some understand the state as an apparatus for the mere maintenance of order, as an observer of national life in which it would intervene only in the event of a violation of that order, without a firm belief in any idea. Others aim to seize the state in order to use it as an instrument, even a tyrannical one, for the realization of the interests of their group or class.
The Spanish Falange will not advocate either of these two positions: neither an indifferent, purely police state, nor a state of a single class or group. It wants a state that will believe in the superior reality and the superior mission of its Spain. A state that, in the service of an idea, will clearly define for every man, every class and every group their task, their right and their sacrifice. A state of ALL, that is, a state whose sole aim is to spread the glory of the eternal idea of Spain; never subservient to the interests of a single class or group.
V ABOLISHMENT OF POLITICAL PARTIES
Since the state can never be a party, all political parties should be abolished.
Political parties arise as a result of a false political organization: the parliamentary regime. In parliament, a few gentlemen claim to represent their voters. But the majority of voters have nothing in common with the elected officials: they neither belong to the same families, nor are they from the same municipalities, nor are they from the same guild.
Some slips of paper that are inserted into the ballot boxes every two or three years represent the only connection between the people and those who claim to be their representatives. In order for this electoral machine to function, it is necessary to shake up people's lives feverishly every two or three years. Candidates shout, swear, promise impossible things. Parties brag about each other, fiercely attack, kill. On those days, the most fervent hatreds are invoked. An evil is born that may remain forever, making the lives of some people impossible.
And how much do the victorious candidates care about the people? They go to the capital to shine, to appear in the newspapers and to spend time debating complicated topics that no one understands. Why would people need such political intermediaries? Why would a person, in order to participate in the life of his political nation, have to become a member of a party or vote for the candidates of any political party?
We are all born into a FAMILY. We all live in a MUNICIPALITY. We all have a JOB or PROFESSION. But no one is born or lives in a political party by nature. A party is something ARTIFICIAL that forcibly unites us with people from other municipalities and other professions with whom we have nothing in common, and separates us from our neighbors and our work associates, i.e. from those with whom we truly share life.
A credible state, like the one desired by the Spanish Falange, will not be founded on the lies of political parties or on the parliament they have given birth to. It will be founded on authentic realities of life: the family. the municipality. the guild or the union.
Thus the new state will have to establish the integrity of the family as a social unit; the autonomy of the municipality as a territorial unit; and the union, the guild, the corporation as the authentic basis of the entire state organization.
VI OVERCOMING THE CLASS STRUGGLE
The new state will not be crudely paralyzed by the struggle for survival to which people are forced. It will not allow one class to organize itself in such a way that it can throw off the yoke of another and oppress it without hindrance. The new state, since it will be totalitarian, a state of all, will consider the goals of each individual group, which is its constituent part, as its own goals and will watch over the interests of all as over its own interest.
The main purpose of wealth is to improve people's living conditions - and not for the majority to be sacrificed for the sake of the luxuries and enjoyments of the minority. Work is the best affirmation of civil dignity. The state will pay the greatest attention to the dignity and well-being of workers. Thus, it will take upon itself, as its primary obligation at any cost, to provide and guarantee to every employee not only a bare existence, but a dignified and decent life.
This will not be charity, but the performance of a state duty.
Consequently, neither the profit from capital - today often unjust - nor the obligations of work will determine the interest or power of the class that dominates at a given moment, but the common interest of national production as well as the power of the state. The classes will not have to organize themselves into a warlike order for the purpose of their own defense, they will be able to be at peace, because the state will constantly watch over all their just interests.
But yes, they will have to organize themselves into a peacetime order of unions and guilds which are today outside public life due to the artificial supervision of parliament and political parties, but they will become the direct organs of the state.
Summary: The current state of the class struggle separates the classes into two camps, of different and opposing interests. From our point of view, all those who participate in production are considered interested parties in the same common enterprise.
VII THE INDIVIDUAL
The basic premise of the Spanish Falange is that man has a body and a soul; that is, that he is born for an eternal destiny, that he is the bearer of eternal values. Therefore, the greatest respect is shown to man's dignity, his integrity and his freedom. But this profound freedom does not allow the undermining of the foundations of common life.
It cannot be allowed that an entire nation serves as a demonstration field for the impudence or extravagance of any subject. To all, a credible freedom that is realized only within the framework of a strong and free nation. To no one, the freedom to destroy, to poison, to inflame passions, to undermine the foundations of the entire solid political organization. Its foundations are: AUTHORITY, HIERARCHY and ORDER.
If the integrity of the individual is always of a sacred nature, he will not be self-realized by the mere possibility of participating in public, national life. The political engagement of individuals can be justified only at the moment when he has fulfilled his obligation to the nation. Only the incapable are spared from such obligations. But parasites, drones, those who want to live like slaves at the expense of others, will not deserve the slightest respect of the new state.
VIII SPIRITUALITY
For the Spanish Falange, life is not a random tangle of economic factors. It does not accept a materialistic interpretation of history. From the spiritual plane, the decisive stimulus in the lives of people and nations has come and gone. The superior aspect of spirituality is religion. No man can help but ask himself the eternal questions about life and death, about the creation of the world and the heavens.
There is no answer to these questions that can be evaded: one must answer affirmatively or negatively.
Spain has always answered in a Christian affirmative. The Christian interpretation of life is above all credible; but it is also, historically speaking, Spanish. Thanks to its sense of universal Christianity, Spain has conquered the sea and the barbarity of unknown continents. It has conquered them in order to incorporate their populations into the universal struggle for salvation.
Thus, the entire renewal of Spain will necessarily have a Christian meaning. This does not mean that the ecclesiastical persecution of infidels will be resurrected. The times of ecclesiastical persecution are over. Nor is it desired that the state should take over the functions that belong to the church. And especially is it not desired to tolerate interference or meddling by the church, which could possibly harm the dignity of the state or national integrity. The new state will be inspired by the traditional religious Christian spirit of Spain, and will therefore harmonize with the church its positions and defenses that are legally its own.
IX GOVERNMENT
This is what the Spanish Falange wants. To achieve this, it calls on all Spaniards who desire the resurrection of a great, free, just and true Spain to a new crusade. Those who embark on this crusade must be dedicated to service and sacrifice. They must accept life as warfare: discipline and danger, self-sacrifice while rejecting all vanity, envy, laziness and slander. At the same time, they will serve this idea joyfully and honorably.
Force is permissible when it is used to defend the ideal that justifies it. Truth, justice and the fatherland will be defended with all their ferocity when they are attacked by force - or from an ambush. But the Spanish Falange will never use force as an instrument of oppression. Those who announce - for example, to the workers - a fascist tyranny are lying. Everything that is a SHEAF or PHALANX means unity, fraternal and courageous cooperation, love. The Spanish Falange, inflamed by love, steadfast in faith, will know how to militarily restore Spain to Spain."

Cara al sol con la camisa nueva,
que tú bordaste en rojo ayer,
me hallará la muerte si me lleva
y no te vuelvo a ver.
Formaré junto a mis compañeros
¡Arriba, escuadras, a vencer,
que en España empieza a amanecer!
¡España una!
¡España grande!
¡España libre!
¡Arriba España!
