Following Germany’s lead over the past two years, Europe has absorbed well over a million refugees and migrants, many of whom fled the bitter intrastate conflicts in war-torn countries such as Syria, Iraq and Libya. Some argue that the chickens may be coming home to roost for German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who insisted in the autumn of 2015 that “we can do it,” and accepted hundreds of thousands of refugees. According to some figures, Germany’s intake of asylum seekers is close to one million.
