Teen 'killers' smile in court

TWO teenage girls accused of bashing and killing a taxi driver walked into court yesterday with smiles on their faces.

And the smiles remained even after they were committed to stand trial for the alleged murder of disabled cab driver Youbert Hormozi.

The girls were both aged 14 when they allegedly assaulted the 53-year-old, stole his cab and left him for dead in the early hours of January 31.

Mr Hormozi, who had just returned to work after a major stroke, died of a heart attack after he was allegedly hit in the head with a rock and punched and kicked. It is alleged he was dragged from the taxi, robbed of his mobile phone and left lying on the road in Canley Vale in Sydney's west as the girls drove off in his taxi after an alleged dispute over the fare.

The girls - who cannot be named for legal reasons - allegedly crashed the cab into parked cars in Bonnyrigg and fled but were arrested one day later.

They appeared bored and fidgety throughout their shared committal hearing in Lidcombe Children's Court yesterday, as Mr Youbert's daughter Melina and ex-wife Anna looked on.

The issue of whether Mr Youbert, who had a history of heart problems, died from a heart attack as a result of the alleged assault was in question yesterday.

Crown Prosecutor Gareth Harrison told the court the prosecution believed the actions of the juveniles caused Mr Hormozi's death.

"The overwhelming inference is that this assault at which there was significant injuries, brought about the heart attack, the cardiac arrest, which caused Mr Hormozi's death," Mr Harrison said. He asked the court to commit each girl to stand trial for murder, aggravated robbery and stealing a motor vehicle.

Chris Tosevic, solicitor for one of the girls who turned 15 while in custody, said Mr Hormozi was a "walking time bomb", who could have suffered another heart attack at any time.

The court heard the girls allegedly made admissions in conversations with other people to killing Mr Hormozi.

It is alleged the girls told a transit officer just before their arrest: "Don't you know who we are? We are the girls who killed the taxi driver."

The girls were remanded in custody and will stand trial in the Supreme Court at a date to be fixed.
