16 illegal migrants land near Ocean Boulevard in Palm Beach

PALM BEACH – Sixteen illegal migrants were picked up on swank Ocean Boulevard in this exclusive seaside town early Thursday, the Border Patrol said.

The migrants – two Peruvians, 1 Dominican and 13 Haitians – were apprehended by police on the 1100 block of South Ocean Boulevard around 1 a.m. The Border Patrol said some migrants may have escaped capture.

Border Patrol agents were questioning the group and theorize they were dropped off in shallow water by a go-fast smuggling boat. In some cases in the past, the smuggler speedboats brought their human cargoes in from the nearby Bahamas.

The captured migrants, which included a juvenile, were taken to the Border Patrol station in Riviera Beach. They are expected to be transferred to the Krome Avenue camp in Miami-Dade later in the day for questioning and probable return to their homelands.
