I don't think it's likely Gregory Smith will realize the futility of his goals anytime soon. He may slowly become disenchanted as he ages. I read this story this morning when I bought my post over breakfast, and surprisingly it's on the third page of the paper, right there as soon as you open the front page!

I did a little bit of reading on this brilliant young fella. He was recently featured on the Oprah show, which of course will inspire other parents of gifted young white kids to guide their children down a similar path. I don't watch Oprah, but I'm willing to bet she didn't tell her white lemming audience the story of Amy Biehl.

Miss Biehl, who had also dedicated her life to serving blacks in Africa, was thanked for her efforts on August 25, 1993, when a gang of niggers pulled Amy from her car and proceeded to kick, stomp, smash her head with a brick, and finally, stab her through her heart.

Of course, even if Oprah did tell her followers the Amy Biehl story, it probably wouldn't matter. Demonstrating the behavior of the quintessential lemming, Miss Biehl's parents fiercely advocated for the early release of their daughter's assailants, and when that was granted, her father shook hands with his daughter's murderers.

Always bugged me by rustling his notes and papers loudly when one of us honkies began to read until I asked him to keep it quiet. He read apoem like this little muse...the white man being the rapist of the world, etc., and a poem about a Mexican maid hating what whites did to her and killing their child, then them...and as the group talked about 'strong metaphors' and 'powerful imagery', I looked him in the eye and said 'there's a lot of hate here. Where's it coming from? Where's all this bitterness starting?' He was stunned that anyone challenged him, and mumbled something about 'history' and 'the past'. 'No, ' I said, it's hatred, and it doesn't belong here. I'm reminded of what Wilfred owen said: 'the poetry is in the pity.'" Complete silence from the kid and group, until a man frowned. "what you just said to this boy is hatred." "No," I replied, "what he wrote is hatred." More silence, then a jew in our group said poetry must be about more than love, but I took back nothing. Cats produce various types of vocalizations. These range from the common meow, to cat calls, to hissing etc. When cats meow several times in a row or for an extended period we humans call that talking. Different breeds "talk" more than other breeds. Most notably the Oriental breeds such as the Siamese, or mixed breeds with some Oriental heritage are known to be good vocalizers.

Cats usually vocalize because they want something like food, rubs or a good brushing. Often though what they want is for you to pay attention to them.

Seven-year-old poet defended, praised

“It’s just a poem,” Autumn Ashante, 7, explained of her “proud and powerful” lyrical offering that has set off a firestorm of controversy and a media feeding frenzy.

Out of the mouth of babes, the seven-year-old prolific reader and performance poet has been “unofficially” banned from Westchester schools because of a dynamic poem she recited, according to her father, Batin Ashante.

“My daughter was invited to perform at Peekskill High and Middle Schools on the last day of Black History Month and responding to a near riot that was avoided on the previous day, and to what she considered to be a racist mural in the middle school, she recited the Black Panther Party’s ‘Black Child’s Pledge’ and her poem ‘White Nationalism Put U In Bondage.’”

Autumn recited the entire pledge before a bank of journalists at City Hall on Tuesday.

“I pledge allegiance to my Black People,” she said. “I will keep myself physically fit, building a strong body free from drugs and other substances which weaken me and make me less capable of protecting myself, my family and my Black brothers and sisters.”

Some in the media were less than thrilled by her “White nationalism is what put you in bondage: pirates and vampires like Columbus, Morgan, and Darwin drank the blood of the sheep, trampled all over them with steel, tricks and deceit.”

Ashante said that his daughter was offended by a four-wall school mural with depictions of Black folks kneeling at the feet of Abe Lincoln with his hands outstretched “like Jesus;” and then Black folk building the pyramids for a white pharaoh and his wife.

“She said, ‘Have you guys seen that racist mural?’ and then she told them about white nationalism,” her father told the Amsterdam News. “Autumn announced that she was speaking to the Black and Spanish students, and did her poem, and those students started screaming. The officials didn’t like that.”

The upstate school district “has a problem with her view of white Nationalism,” he added, “I guess they think that a seven-year-old can’t understand because she has not seen what happened during Hurricane Katrina, right?”

The Amsterdam News asked her what she thought about the subsequent official school response after her presentation.

While saying that the “Black and Spanish” students cheered, a handful of white students did walk out, Ashante replied, “I think it was sad and I am confused because they are making a big fuss about a poem.”

She understands however that the official response means that, “It was effective to them.”

Ashante, a group home counselor, said that his girl “loves to read. She drinks in books and remembers everything. Right now she’s reading another encyclopedia, Zora Neale Hurston, James Baldwin, and Frederick Douglass.
He explained that they worked on the poem together after reading “The Disasters Darwinism Brought to Humanity.”

Ashante said that his daughter was invited to the school by Peekskill Middle School music teacher Councilmember Melvin Bolden.

“He was suspended, they took him out of the classroom,” said Ashante.
Bolden did not return an Amsterdam News phone call by press time.
Judith Johnson, the superintendent of Peekskill City School District, did not return an Amsterdam News inquiry, but her assistant Alma Jimenez said that all she could do was read a statement.

She denied that Ashante has been banned from performing in the school district, but said, “The controversy surrounding this situation is unfortunate. Autumn … appeared before a culturally diverse [audience] and in her poem and actions she attempted to bring a wedge between African-American and white students. The students rejected her efforts. We do not have a racially isolated community, people live and work and go to school together.

“The teacher who brought her to the school [Mel Bolden] … said that her performance was inappropriate for a young audience and has apologized for the incident viewed by many as racist.”

Parents and “the entire community” were told that Ashante’s “views and actions” did not reflect the views of the Peekskill school district.”

The Amsterdam News responded that the person in question is a sever-year-old, but Jimenez said abruptly that “I can only read the statement.”

At Tuesday press conferences Councilman Charles Barron said, “Eliot Spitzer needs to investigate this case. She’s a seven-year-old who has the right to free speech.”

Later that same afternoon Rev. Al Sharpton harangued Westchester school officials who called in a recorded apology to parents of students at Peekskill High School and Peekskill Middle School.

Ashante said that his daughter has been traumatized by what Sharpton called “an entire overreaction.”

“The proper thing to do would have been to call the schools together and have an analytical discussion, not apologize as if she did something wrong,” Sharpton blasted.

Barron presented Ashante with a special proclamation from the City Council. “We don’t care what anybody else says, we are proud of you because you spoke out for us. She said nothing that was not true or inspiring,” he said of the child who, according to her father, speaks three languages.

“The pubic school system needs to hire her father as “a paid consultant. Maybe we need to write a letter to [Schools Chancellor] Joel Klein.”

“I’d love to share my formula,” said Ashante. “It is one classroom per child.”
Late on Tuesday evening, Ashante called the Amsterdam News to say that someone was littering the Peekskill neighborhood with Nazi fliers.

Upstate resident Don DeBar, the Hudson Valley reporter for WBAI’s Wake Up Call, told the Amsterdam News that the fliers look “identical to the expensively laminated inappropriate garbage sent out last year. It has swastikas and a racist and anti-Semitic blurb.”

DeBar said that he thinks that it is the work of a “guy in his garage with a laminating machine, who goes out at the weekend and throws the fliers in his station wagon. I don’t think they were made in response to the poem issue, the flier looks like the generic garbage. Maybe he read about the issue this week and decided to put Peekskill on his route.”

“I’m not shocked, I understand the times in which we live, and I’m trying to make Autumn aware,” said Ashante. “This is near Bear Mountain, the Klan run this area.”

He told the paper that he has raised Autumn by himself since she was 11 months old. A media veteran already, Ashante has performed at shows and cultural events from the African Burial Ground to Katrina. She is a voracious reader who began reading books at two years old.

“I’ve seen how much power we have when our children are exposed to knowledge of our history. The best thing they ever did was to give her a library card,” he smiled.

Asked what she would tell fellow second-graders (if she wasn’t home-schooled by father), Ashante told the Amsterdam News, “I’d encourage them to read more because knowledge is power.”

Racial poem causes flap in Peekskill

MOUNT VERNON — Some call Autum Ashante a prodigy, a 7-year-old girl who has traveled the world and received accolades for her socially conscious poetry. Others, particularly some parents and students in Peekskill who said a racially charged poem the girl recited sparked a mini-furor, wondered if she was being misguided.

Autum, who lives in Mount Vernon with her father, Batin Ashante, is in the center of a firestorm after performing a controversial recitation at a Black History Month event at Peekskill's middle and high schools. She read an original poem, entitled "White Nationalism Put U In Bondage," that describes Christopher Columbus and Charles Darwin as "pirates" and "vampires" for robbing black people of their culture, identity and wealth.

In the piece, Autum, writes: "Black lands taken from your hands, by vampires with no remorse. They took the gold, the wisdom and all of the storytellers. They took the black women, with the black man weak. Made to watch as they changed the paradigm of our village."

Before her Feb. 28 performances at the schools, which lasted about 20 minutes, students say Autum asked white students to remain seated while black students stood and recited the The Black Children's Pledge, an oath of responsibility and black pride made popular by the Black Panther Party during the 1960s. She then went on to recite the white nationalism poem.

Her father had said previously she had been banned from performing at Peekskill schools, but late last night a school official said that was not the case. The school will implement a screening process for future performers, said Melvin Bolden, a music teacher and Peekskill councilman.

Peekskill district officials declined to comment yesterday, but parents said after the program the district sent out a recorded message to all parents apologizing for the performance.

"When you throw a brick in a pack of dogs, the only one that yells out is the one that got hit," Ashante, 40, a member of the Nation of Islam, said quoting the slain civil rights leader Malcolm X. "When you hit them with truth, brother, you're naturally going to get this reaction."

Calling district officials "racist crackers," he said his daughter is not prejudiced and was only trying to promote unity among black youths by teaching them about their history.

"It was not about being disrespectful to anyone," said Ashante, who brought attention to the conflict by notifying news outlets. "It was the truth. There was not one line in the poem that was out of turn."

Autum, a poet and aspiring actress who has performed on Showtime At The Apollo and HBO's Def Poetry Jam, was invited to perform at the middle school and high school by Bolden, who is also the producer of her upcoming poetry album, Ashante said.

"I'm confused about why they're making a big fuss about it," Autum, who is home-schooled by a private instructor, said. "It wasn't really for white people. It was for black people. Stop killing your brothers and sisters. We're black people and we need black love."

But that's not how it came across to many students and teachers. Marcellus Cunningham, a freshman who attended the Peekskill High School assembly, said he was offended by the poem because he is bi-racial.

"She should have never said that in the first place," said Cunningham, 14, who is black and Cherokee Indian. "She's giving the wrong idea what to think of other people."

Michele Cunningham, Marcellus's mother, said the subject matter wasn't offensive, but the event should have presented opposing viewpoints.

"It has to be done in a certain context," said Michele Cunningham, 42, who owns a clothing store in Peekskill. "If it's just one point of view, that's all they are hearing."

Autum said she wrote the poem after watching "The Disasters Darwinism Brought to Humanity," a documentary that claims Charles Darwin's theory of evolution is false and links it to the development of fascism, communism and racism in the 19th century.

"I think it's terrible, but it's what they do. So I shouldn't be surprised about it," she said, referring to some of the white people discussed in the film. "All they do is just steal, rob and murder...that's the only thing they were raised to do."

"Even the ones that try to fix up with us, they're still devils," she said. "I feel they're devils and they should be gone. We should be away from them and still be in Africa."

"She's only 7. You have to start thinking where is she getting that information from," the elder Cunningham said.

The older Ashante, who is also a poet, said his daughter's strong language is her own and denies that he wrote the poems for her or is teaching her hatred. He said he introduced her to black history and poetry, but that much of her writing is influenced by current events, including what some see as the poor treatment of blacks and poor after Hurricane Katrina.

"My daughter is not racist," he said. "She's too little to be one. She knows her history. She knows the truth."
