A victory! Yesterday the Senate passed the Alexander amendment, No. 4222, to the Senate budget resolution by a vote of 54-44.

The budget resolution amendment recommends removing $670,000 from the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) budget – money the agency plans to spend filing lawsuits against other employers like the Salvation Army that have English-on-the-job rules, and using the money to teach English instead.

Although budget resolutions are for guidance and not strictly binding on future appropriations, the vote is an important victory nevertheless. It shows that a majority of the Senate think the EEOC is abusing its authority by filing these lawsuits and prepares the way for binding budget votes in the future.
