ACLU sends letter to Tustin Unified
The group alleges too few minority students are enrolled in the Gifted and Talented program.

The Orange County Register

TUSTIN - The American Civil Liberties Union sent a letter today to Tustin Unified School District complaining of the lack of Latino and black students in the district's Gifted and Talented Education, or GATE, program.

According the ACLU's letter, enrollment in the GATE program does not represent the diversity in the general student enrollment.

For the 2005-06 school year, 8.6 percent of students enrolled in the program were Latino and 1.4 percent were black, according to state figures. Meanwhile, Latinos make up 43.1 percent of all students in the district and blacks make up 2.6 percent.
District officials said they are reviewing the letter.

Michael Soller, an ACLU spokesman, said his group began looking into the issue after a district parent contacted the ACLU.
Soller said he hopes his group could meet with district staff to discuss the issue in coming weeks.

Prediction:
ACLU will sue, calling prop 209 http://vote96.ss.ca.gov/Vote96/html/BP/209.htm unconstitutional. Prop 209 basically says no affirmative blacktion allowed in schools or public employment or contracting. (like that has happened) They just want the door wide open for Whitey to get screwed.
