Oklahoma City mother and boyfriend arrested in death of 3-year-old

A woman and her boyfriend were arrested Wednesday on first-degree murder complaints in connection with the death of the woman's 3-year-old son, who police said had "suspicious injuries."

Eli Johnson, who turned 3 in January, was taken to a local emergency room in critical condition Wednesday afternoon, Oklahoma City police Master Sgt. Gary Knight said. Hospital officials called police after doctors noted multiple injuries. Eli died shortly after he arrived at the hospital.

The child's mother, Tye Nicole Johnson, 24, and her boyfriend, Eddie Valdez, 23, who police said is not the child's father, were booked into the Oklahoma County jail Wednesday night, Knight said.

In addition to the murder complaints against the couple, police said, Valdez is being held on a child abuse complaint and Tye Nicole Johnson on a complaint of permitting child abuse.

Seven other children were taken from the mother's house in the 7700 block of Monterey Drive and were placed in protective custody, Knight said.
