Women seeking to terminate their pregnancies were turned away at clinics across Texas, providers said, after strict new regulations for physicians who perform abortions prompted a dozen facilities to stop offering them.
The US Supreme Court, which rejected Oklahoma's appeal last week in an abortion case, is considering whether to review a separate state law that would require women to undergo an ultrasound examination before terminating her pregnancy.
Legislation that would prohibit abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, at which point science indicates that unborn babies are able to feel pain, has been presented in the US Senate.
Similar fetal-pain abortion bans have been enacted at the state level in Alabama, Arizona, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Nebraska, Oklahoma and, most recently, Texas.
