Well, as much as I hate to report, it appears the jewball rape story from a month ago was not a farce. It appears there was a sexual assault (guy was caught attempting another sexual assault) and he appears to be white.

Lakewood man held in sexual assault of township woman

TOMS RIVER — Ocean County authorities today announced the arrest of a Lakewood man in connection with the May 7 abduction and sexual assault of a Lakewood woman.

Brandon J. Fritz, 21, of Lakewood, is charged with aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault and kidnapping. He is being held in lieu of $1 million bail, authorities said.

Authorities said Fritz was arrested yesterday in Old Bridge in a separate case in which he is charged with burglary, robbery and attempted sexual assault.

Authorities said some similarities between that case and the Lakewood case led them to make the arrest.

Authorities said Fritz worked in landscaping and sprinkler installation for a Howell company, although no further information on that was immediately available.

On Monday, according to authorities, Fritz went to a home in Old Bridge for a job. The next day -- Tuesday -- he came back with the intention of stealing a television set.

While Fritz was there, the female homeowner came back. Fritz attempted to sexually assault the woman before something interrupted him and he fled, but police arrested him later after tracking him through the sprinkler company, said Ocean County Prosecutor Thomas F. Kelaher.

The woman, described as 48 years old, recognized Fritz as the man who had been working on her house. Old Bridge police arrested Fritz and saw similarities between that case and the Lakewood abduction. From there, Lakewood police and the Ocean County Prosecutor's Office got involved.

Fritz is being held in the Middlesex County Jail.

Today, authorities for the first time said that the Lakewood victim's head had been duct-taped and her wrists had been bound. Authorities said duct Fritz had duct tape with him at the time of his arrest, and that -- combined with his resemblance to the suspect in a police sketch stemming from the first attack and the circumstances of the Tuesday attack -- prompted Old Bridge authorities to contact Ocean County
authorities.

"If (the Old Bridge woman) hadn't come home, he probably would have left,'' said Kelaher. "I guess it was a target of opportunity.''

The Lakewood victim, described as about 20 years old, was abducted about 9:45 p.m. May 7 outside the Trim Gym health club in the ShopRite plaza at Kennedy Boulevard and Route 9 by a person driving a green Jeep Cherokee, police said at the time.

The woman was sexually assaulted and then returned to the same shopping mall in the morning, police said. The woman was treated at Kimball Medical Center, Lakewood.

Fritz, who is single, is charged with sexual assault, aggravated sexual assault and kidnapping in the Lakewood attack, which involved a 20-year-old woman who was abducted as she left a health club there.

He is charged with burglary, aggravated robbery and attempted sexual assault in the Old Bridge case, Kelaher said.

There is no indication that Fritz picked either victim based on their religious persuasion. Orthodox Jewish leaders in Lakewood had feared that the first attack may have been motivated by the woman's religion -- she is an Orthodox Jew.

The Lakewood Vaad offered a $50,000 reward for information leading to the perpetrator of the May 7 attack, in which the victim was taken to a wooded area and sexually assaulted for five hours before being returned to the spot where she was abducted and left, with duct tape around her face.

"This crime had a very large impact on the quality of life in our town,'' said Lakewood Mayor Meir Lichtenstein.

Prosecutors released a mug shot of the suspect in hopes that publicity would lead other potential victims of the man to come forward. Kelaher said authorities suspect there may have been other attacks but aren't sure.
