Councilwoman facing charges will not run
November 6, 2007

SAGINAW -- A former Saginaw mayor who is awaiting trial on charges of arson and insurance fraud is wrapping up her tenure on the City Council.

Wilmer Jones Ham McZee, mother of former Detroit Piston Darvin Ham, is not running for re-election

She joined the council in 1994 when members appointed her to a vacant seat. In 2001, she became the first woman to serve as Saginaw's mayor.

McZee is accused of setting her 1986 Mercedes-Benz on fire March 9, 2006, and trying to make a false insurance claim.

She has pleaded not guilty in the case. Her trial is set to begin Nov. 20.
