Sentana-Reis's website is still operational and is hosted in the United States. However, the judge has ordered him to shut it down.

It looks like his website The Federation of Free Planets is indeed still accessible. How's he supposed to "shut it down" if he's in prison and not allowed net access for three years after he gets out? Would the judge's order still apply if he sold the website content to an American? Do Canuck jews really control what can be hosted on US-based websites? How hard would it be to mirror the website?

Edmonton man jailed 16 months for web hate

Canada’s first-ever criminal prosecution for promoting hatred on the Internet has resulted in a 16-month jail sentence.

Reni Santana-Ries, formerly known as Reinhard Gustav Mueller, was sent to prison by Edmonton Court of Queen’s Bench Judge Philip Clarke, who cited an “appalling” level of hatred in his web postings.

Clarke noted that Sentana-Ries showed no remorse and was likely to re-offend. He added three-years of probation following the jail term and ordered Sentana-Ries not to access the Internet during that time.

Sentana-Ries was convicted by a jury in December 2005 for using his U.S.-based website to accuse Jews of a host of malevolent activities. Jews, he claimed, created the deadly AIDS and Ebola viruses, fabricated the Holocaust and were intent on world domination. The website also described Jews as subhumans and demons and blamed Jews for the destruction of the World Trade Center and the Columbia space shuttle disaster. Sentana-Ries added a bizarre science-fiction element to his postings, styling himself the Lion of the Tribe of Judah and calling his website The Federation of Free Planets.

Crown attorney Steven Bilodeau had asked the judge for a sentence that ranged between 12 and 18 months. The maximum jail penalty for promoting hatred is two years. Sentana-Ries’ sentence is the longest ever imposed for a hate promotion conviction.

Bilodeau called the case a “benchmark” and said the 16-month term sends a clear message that society won’t tolerate the kind of messages published by Sentana-Ries.

“The material he put on [the web] as so hateful and so strong in its toxic nature, it called for the strongest possible response,” he added.

Police and the Crown did not hesitate to employ the anti-hate law in the case, Bilodeau said.

Using the Internet – as opposed to distributing the same anti-Jewish material in printed flyers – made the case more serious. “The reach [of the Internet] is enormous,” making it incumbent on the Crown to send out a strong message that it will not be tolerated, he said.

Bernie Farber, CEO of Canadian Jewish Congress, was called to testify as an expert witness for the Crown regarding the impact on the Jewish community of the website, as well as the role of the Internet in promoting hate.

The length of the sentence “has now set the tone and sent a very significant message to hatemongers,” Farber said.

[highlight]Richard Warman, an Ottawa human rights lawyer, said the sentence’s deterrent aspect could be significant: “It will give people a very long pause before continuing to distribute hate propaganda.”

Warman, who has launched complaints in 16 cases of Internet hate before the Canadian Human Rights Commission, said Sentana-Ries is not known as a member of any racist organization. “Clearly he is on the extreme fringe of an extreme fringe.”

But, Warman said, “when he describes the Jewish people as demonic and spilling blood, that kind of threat has to be taken seriously.”[/highlight]

Bilodeau rejected suggestions that Sentana-Ries was more of an eccentric than a dangerous hatemonger. “Anyone convicted [of promoting hate] is not going to be a right-thinking member of the community,” he said.

He pointed out that Holocaust denier Ernst Zundel also employed science fiction (claiming Antarctica was a base for Nazi UFOs). “They are doing their level best to persuade people to feel the same hatred they do.”

Representing himself at the trial and in the recent sentencing hearing, Sentana-Ries repeated his often bizarre theories, saying that as Lion of the Tribe of Judah, he served as guardian and protector of the Jewish people. At trial he claimed to be of ancient Egyptian descent with “authority recognized by all high councils of this galaxy.” He also claimed a number of titles, including Grand World Councillor, Starship Commander Dexter and Guardian of the Arab Prophetess Uthrania Seila.

Farber was cross-examined by Sentana-Ries and in nearly three hours was asked numerous bizarre questions about the Bible, about Allied treatment of German soldiers after the war, about the alleged vengefulness of Jews and about supposed Jewish control of the Canadian economy. On several occasions, Sentana-Ries claimed he had secret information that led him to his beliefs about the Jews, Farber stated.

Ironically, it was Sentana-Ries himself who brought attention to his website.

He called Edmonton police to complain that someone had left Molotov cocktails on his lawn as revenge for his politically incorrect website. Police investigated the site and that led to charges, Bilodeau said.

In all, investigators compiled enough anti-Semitic material to fill three binders, he added.

Looks like it's about time for some of these Canadian WN's to seek asylum...
