Search for baby Zarial is over

(MOBILE, Ala.) Aug. 9 -- Saturday family members and friends will gather to remember little Zarial Lewis. There won't be a tiny casket, but for many who loved the little girl it may not matter. This may be their only chance for closure. The heartbreaking realization is sinking in, baby Zarial may never be found.

"There is a way to do a search of dumps, but it would cost $2 million and no guarantee of results," Mobile County District Attorney John Tyson Jr. said.

Prosecutors said they can get results without the infant's body. Police said they believe the 4-week-old is at a Brewton landfill.

"Without a body all you have is a report of a missing child," Defense Attorney Art Powell said.

Prichard Police said they have a confession. They said Geretha Lewis told them she put the baby in a trash bin near her home. It's a statement Lewis' lawyer will fight to suppress.

Prosecutors said they'll fight just as hard with what they have which is circumstantial evidence.

There's no fighting that sinking feeling anymore. Zarial's mom, who is charged with her murder, will not be at the memorial service. Her bond is set at $100,000 and her attorney said it is unlikely she will be able to afford that in time. We're told, like the baby, she'll be remembered in prayers.

The memorial service for Zarial is set Saturday at 11 a.m. at the Revelation Missionary Baptist Church in Mobile.
