DPS: Grads get $106M in college aid
8:11 AM, June 18, 2012

Led by graduates at Cass High, the Detroit Public Schools' class of 2012 received more than $106 million in scholarships and grants, according to the district.

"Detroit has thousands of students who are excelling and many more who have graduated, gone on to college and become leaders in their respective fields and industries, and in their communities," DPS emergency manager Roy Roberts said in a statement about the scholarships and grants. "This should serve as an inspiration to our young people and all those adults who taught and assisted them along the way, and encouragement to those adults to create opportunities for even more students in the future."

Graduates of Cass Tech were awarded $29.6 million in money for college, according to figures just released by the district. That includes $11.6 million in scholarships from individuals and other benefactors, $2.8 million in scholarships from organizations and foundations, $7.2 million in athletic scholarships, $643,000 in the state of Michigan's Tuition Incentive Program and $7.2 million in other grants.

Graduates at Renaissance High were awarded about $16.8 million in scholarships and grants, $14.3 million is going to graduates of Western International and about $11.5 is going to graduates of the Detroit School of Arts, according to district figures. The figures are collected from guidance counselors at the district's 24 high schools.

The district, which typically has a 62% graduation rate, had 4,094 graduates this year.
