Kansas City police have used DNA to link a 69-year-old twice-convicted rapist to five unsolved rapes from the summer of 1982 in the Westport area.Detectives from the cold-case sex-crimes unit picked up Samuel S. Johnson on Friday from a prison in Licking, Mo., and took him to the jail at Kansas City Police Headquarters to face new criminal charges.
The charges represent the oldest sex-related cases filed by Jackson County prosecutors using improved DNA technology.
The cases also represent the third time DNA has linked a suspect to a series of 1980s rapes that traumatized Westport area women. Last year, Shy Bland was convicted for 13 attacks in the mid-1980s. Gary Jackman was convicted in 2006 after admitting 32 attacks in the mid-1980s.
Johnson already is serving a life sentence without parole for 30 years for a rape in summer 1982. He would be eligible for parole in a few years.
He was sentenced as a persistent sexual offender because of a rape conviction from 1960. He served 14 years in that case before his sentence was commuted.
Although Johnson has been convicted of only one 1982 rape, police thought he was responsible for six other sexual attacks in the same time frame and same area with the same knife-wielding method.
Police did not have evidence to seek charges back then, but DNA evidence in recent years linked Johnson to each attack, according to police and court records.
The statute of limitations has expired in one case of an attempted rape. A man attacked two roommates and tried to rape one of them, but the victims fought him off, police said.
Jackson County prosecutors filed charges this week in the five other attacks, which occurred against women who were alone. They charged Johnson with nine felonies: sodomy, attempted sodomy, robbery and six counts of rape.
The attacks occurred between June 7 and Aug. 26, 1982, at the apartments of single women ages 21 to 39. Each victim told police that upon waking up, she found a stranger in her bedroom with a knife. The stranger often entered through unlocked sliding doors or windows. Police also think he broke through door or window screens.
The stranger pushed his knife against each victim’s neck and threatened to kill her if she screamed.
At least two victims suffered cuts, one on her thumb and the other on her ear.
Reserve police officers patrolling the area because of the rash of sexual assaults arrested Johnson on Sept. 4, 1982. He was convicted the next year.
The crime laboratory began finding connections among the unsolved cases in 2006. The Police Department started a cold-case sex-crimes unit in January 2008 to handle the growing number of DNA cases.
When Detective Gary Snyder interviewed Johnson in prison last month, Johnson denied knowing, raping or having sexual contact with any of the victims, court records said.
Snyder said most of the victims were “very happy” to hear of the developments in their cases.
“They felt like they could finally get justice,” he said.
But other victims greeted the news with hesitation.
“They had moved on and didn’t want to think about it again,” he said. “One woman said she was happy to hear the news, but then it started bringing up bad memories, and she started having nightmares.”
The attacks, all from 1982:
•June 7, at 1:30 a.m. in the 4400 block of Holly Street.
•July 8, at 5 a.m. in the 4000 block of Clark Street.
•July 20, at 2:15 a.m. in the 4400 block of Jarboe Street.
•July 26, at 2:45 a.m. in the 4400 block of Jefferson Street.
•Aug. 26, at 4:13 a.m. in the 4000 block of Oak Street.
