Estonia: gay slurs force diplomat out

The Dutch Ambassador to Estonia has been forced to leave after his partner suffered homophobic slurs once the couple’s sexuality was publicised. Ambassador Hans Glaubitz will be transferred to Canada, at his own request, after his Cuban-born partner suffered [color="Red"]homophobic and racist taunts on the streets of the Estonian capital, Tallinn.

“As far as I know there were no physical attacks, but verbal attacks that were very threatening,” said the Ambassador’s spokesperson, Herman Van Gelderen.

Van Gelderen said the Dutch foreign minister will meet to address the issue with his Estonian counterpart. Dutch newspaper NRC Handelsblad reported the harassment began shortly after the couple’s sexuality was revealed in a local weekly newspaper.

Ambassador Glaubitz said [color="red"]Estonian “society is far from ready to accept two men as a couple, especially if one is black.” :cheers:

“We can’t do anything about bad manners on the street,” he said. “I am… convinced that most Estonians are very nice and polite.”

Homophobia is rife in many parts of Eastern Europe, with politicians in Poland, Russia and Latvia making public statements inciting hatred toward gays, and attempting to prevent Pride marches from going ahead.
