Studds, 1st openly gay congressman, dies

BOSTON - Former Rep. Gerry Studds, who became first openly gay member of Congress when his homosexuality was exposed during a teenage page sex scandal, died early Saturday. He was 69.
Studds died at Boston Medical Center several days after he collapsing while walking his dog, his husband said. Doctors determined his loss of consciousness was due to a blood clot in his lung, Dean Hara said.
Studds regained consciousness and seemed to be improving, but his condition deteriorated Friday because of a second blood clot. The origin of the second clot was not immediately determined, said Hara, who married Studds shortly after same-sex marriage was legalized in Massachusetts in 2004.
Hara said Studds gave courage to gay people by winning re-election after publicly acknowledging his homosexuality.
"He gave people of his generation, or my generation, of future generations, the courage to do whatever they wanted to do," said Hara, 49.

Boston, MA (AHN) - Former U.S. Rep. Gerry Studds, the first openly gay person elected several times to Congress, died in Boston on Saturday. According to Dean Hara, Studds' husband of one year, the democrat was hospitalized at Boston Medical Center on Oct.3 after he collapsed while walking his dog. He was 69.
Harra said doctors later blamed a blood clot in his lung as a reason for his sudden collapse.
Studds regained consciousness, remained in the hospital, and seemed to be improving. He was scheduled to be transferred to a rehabilitation center, but his condition deteriorated Friday and he died at about 1:30 a.m. Saturday, Hara told the AP.
Hara married Studds last year, shortly after gay marriage the state of Massachusetts legalized the gay marriage.
Harra said Studds was a pioneer who gave courage to gay people everywhere by winning re-election after publicly acknowledging his homosexuality.
