"We're looking at it as a possible civil-rights violation," Lawrence Barry of the FBI's Richmond field office said yesterday. The bureau is working in conjunction with Virginia State Police, which sent an agent to meet with King and Queen authorities yesterday. Carla Lewis, six months pregnant, said she returned home Tuesday afternoon to find references to the Ku Klux Klan painted on hallway walls, closet doors, a bedroom door and a washing machine. A racial slur and an encircled K were painted on the wall of her 3-year-old daughter's bedroom; a racial slur was also sprayed on the door of her 5-year-old son's room. Bleach had been splattered on the home's green carpet. Carla Lewis, 27, is white; her husband, Samuel, 29, is black. Photos of them and their biracial children had been placed facedown on the floor or on their computer desk by the vandals. King Salim Khalfani, executive director of the state branch of the NAACP, called on the FBI and Virginia Public Safety Secretary John Marshall, who oversees the Virginia State Police, to investigate Thursday morning. "This needs to be taken seriously. . . . And we can't depend on the local authorities to get the job done," he said. Khalfani said local authorities seemed to treat the incident as a "teenage prank." On Thursday afternoon, King and Queen sheriff's officials called state police to ask them to handle the case in the county of about 6,800 residents, about 33 percent of whom are black. King and Queen Sheriff E.C. Walton said yesterday that he asked state police to investigate because the state agency has better resources. He said a state police crime-scene technician helped investigate on the day of the incident. Walton said that his department takes every crime seriously. "We've been trying, ever since I've been in office, to treat everybody equally," said Walton, who has been sheriff for 11 years. "We definitely wouldn't take something like this lightly." Virginia State Police Sgt. Kevin Barrick said it's not unusual for a local department to ask for assistance. "Sometimes in those smaller county agencies they don't have a whole lot of help or expertise," he said. Walton said the incident is the first apparently racially motivated crime of its kind during his time as sheriff. The county was the scene of notable racial tensions in the summer of 1993, when the Klan held a rally and cross burning on private property. It's too bad we don't have WPL anymore. Ron & Ironguard could plaster the hell out of King & Queen county!

We would, too. I actually have family there. Too bad they have to live in a county with such a dopey idiot for a sheriff. BTW, here is a great quote from the Crime-Disgrace article today:

'An NAACP spokesperson could not be reached for comment yesterday.'

Well, that is very strange. They were all very available for comment when this story first broke.
