Kwaps' Kid Leads Groid Gang on Violent Robbery Rampage

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- The son of two Broward County police officers has been arrested with 6 others for allegedly taking part in a violent crime spree.

Nicolas Szczepanik, 18, was arrested by Fort Lauderdale Police early Wednesday morning after an officer spotted a vehicle that matched the description of a car used in two strong armed robberies earlier in the night.

Bernard Lawrence was one of the victims. He said he was walking home from work on University Drive when a Blue Ford Expedition with 7 young men inside pulled out. Several of them got out and started beating him up. He said Szczepanik, the only white suspect, was clearly the ringleader.
"The big white guy with the faded hair, he hit me first, on the side of the head and in the mouth,” Lawrence said.

Police said Szczenpanik and the other suspects also robbed three people outside a Dunkin Donuts on the 8700 block of Wiles Road in in Coral Springs.

Szczepanik stands out in this pack because both of his parents are cops. His father works for the Lauderhill Police Department and his mother is a Broward Sheriff’s deputy.

When Fort Lauderdale police arrested the group they found cell phones, jewelry and money belonging to the victims in their car.

"There were latex gloves, a stun gun and other items that would assist in a robbery. It’s a great combination to commit robberies,” said Fort Lauderale Police Detective Kathy Collins.

Also arrested were Warren Day, Demetrius Hutchins, Emmanuel Prevaliy, Fredrick Mertil, Antoine Robinson and Joshua Obile. Collins said the group is suspected in recent robberies in at least four Broward cities, including Lauderhill, where Szczepanik’s father patrols the streets.

Lawrence suffered a fractured elbow, chipped teeth and a busted lip. All of that for his cell phone. He wonders why Szczepanik and the other young men would risk their futures for so little.

“Honestly, having two cops for parents, he’s probably had every opportunity to get further in life and he just let it all go out the window,” Lawrence said.

Fort Lauderdale police said they arrested Szczepanik in March after he tried to rob a group of women with an AK-47 but the case was dropped because the victims refused to testify.
All seven men are being held without bond and will make their first appearance before a judge on Thursday morning.
