Archived photo from Antwerp Jewish communityBelgium - Shock spread through Antwerp’s Jewish community, particularly the Belzer Chasidic community, after four men walking the streets near their homes were violently attacked yesterday (Tuesday) evening.

The four men are: Rabbi Chaim Yitzchok Singer, Hershel Friedman, Shmuel Avraham Friedman and Shlomo Moscowitz. They had been walking in the street just before 8:30 p.m. when a man with an Arab appearance suddenly approached them with a metal bar in his hand and began striking them. According to the victims, the assailant screamed in Arabic, including the phrase “Allah Akhbar!”, while attacking them.

The men tried to defend themselves and grab the attacker but failed, allowing him to escape and leave them wounded. Hatzolah members who arrived at the scene provided emergency treatment as all four needed hospitalization at the local hospital, with one of the victims moderately wounded.

Police searched for the perpetrator throughout the night. He has thus far not been apprehended. Community Shomrim also staged a search throughout the neighborhood based on the description of the attacker provided, but were unable to determine his whereabouts.

The chareidi community tells Ladaat.net that since the Gaza war, citywide anti-Semitism indicators have risen but never to the level of physical attacks, remaining at the verbal attack level. The boldness of the attack against the foursome crosses new lines.
