Schoolgirl's death 'God's will'

The grieving mother of a Brooklyn girl who was run over and killed when an SUV drove around her school bus refused to fault anyone yesterday for the fatal accident.

" 'No one is to blame,' " Rivka Friedlander said through a family friend, just a day after her 5-year-old daughter, Chana, was run down on Marcy Ave. in Williamsburg. " 'This is God's will,' " the mother said.

Chana - a kindergartner at the Beth Chana School for Girls - was running to catch her bus at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday when she darted between two parked cars into the path of a [color="Red"]BMW.

She was killed instantly as her mother cared for her two other children inside the family's nearby apartment. Chana's family buried her hours later, keeping with Orthodox Jewish custom.

"They are, of course, torn to pieces," said Rabbi David Niederman. "But they're not bitter."

The SUV driver, Tricia Thomas, 27, an occupational therapist at Public School 141, has not been charged with a crime. Police were expecting to meet with Thomas yesterday.

But a spokesman for the United Federation of Teachers, which provided Thomas with an attorney, said a meeting had not been scheduled.

Bus drivers who pick up kids along Marcy Ave. said they routinely stop at an angle to prevent cars from passing them on the one-way street. But a police source said the maneuver is illegal - and cops have not endorsed it.

"The primary issue is the safety of the children," said Niederman. "A mother should be assured that when she sends her children to school in the morning that they will return safely in the afternoon."

However, if you had bought up one of those scenarios that has happened in Lakewood repeatedly, where some little yid cooks in a hot car because the parent is too stupid to remember to bring them in side, that would be a different story.
