June 7, 2006 (Last Updated: 6:58:57 PM) - Two brothers are in custody charged with the murder of another man outside a high school graduation in Gary. The victim was attending his sister's graduation when he was shot and killed in the school's parking lot.
The family of Tywon Newsome, 21, said he got into a fight with his girlfriend's ex-boyfriend in the school parking lot before the shooting.
"They started arguing, one of the boys left, went back to the truck, got a gun, and shot him," said Denise Hughes, victim's aunt. "Holding on, but it's hard."Police charged the two brothers with murder at William Wirt High School. The brothers have made statements and apparently admitted to dating the victim's girlfriend over three years ago and said they were upset about statements that were made.
Twenty-one-year-old Evan Eskew and 18-year-old Isiah Eskew have been charged in the fatal shooting of Tywon Newsome. The charges are murder and possession of firearms on school property.
"The parties had dated in the past and apparently one of the subjects was still upset about comments that were made about three years ago," said Det. James Bond, Gary Police Dept.
"Holding up pretty well for the family, but on the inside, I'm hurt. He was a nice young man and wanted to help," said Thomas Barbee, victim's father.Newsome had just watched his sister graduate from high school
"My mother said he was up in the balcony and he had a smile on his face she'd never seen before, he was so happy that he was at his sister's graduation," said Hughes.
"He loved to laugh. He was a jokester, he loved to have fun and joke around. He was kind-hearted, he was," said Shyvinn Cobb, student. [color="Red"] Probably NOT a relative of Craig's
"He's in a better place now. No more sleepless nights worrying about him. He all right," said Tarsha Newsome, victim's mother.
School officials said during the ceremony people were oblivious as to what was happening outside.
"I'm mad because people can't enjoy their stuff because something like this happened," said Aishya Lambert, student.
"It didn't seem like nothing was wrong. Everything went along very well with the graduation. Everything was peaceful and quiet and moved real good and came out and this is what I saw," said Lamar Jackson, graduation guest.
"It was very quiet inside. However, when they came out of court, they saw on the south end some disruption with the officers, of course, and the ambulances," said Dr. Mary Steele, superintendent of Gary Public Schools.
Police said the three suspects in custody had nothing to do with the school or the graduation ceremony.
"They weren't students here. They were adult. They were not students at the school. This had nothing to do with the graduation that occurred inside. This happened outside," said . Richard Allen, Gary Police Dept.
"We're going to protect our schools, but as the superintendent said this, had nothing to do with the graduation going on inside. This was unconnected situation outside," said Mayor Rudy Clay, Gary.
Gary police officers were able to apprehend the suspects shortly after the shootings. Today school is back in session. Students and faculty doing their best to move on.
"I just know it was an unfortunate incident of what happened," said Gloria Griffen, teacher. "We're going along with the educational practices here at Wirt."
Gary officials plan to step up security around the school events even though the shooting was not considered school-related.
There was a third person in custody, but police say they had to release that person.
If the brothers are convicted, they could face up to 65 years for the murder charge and six years for possession of firearms on school property.
