He was just 14 when he began breaking into the homes of elderly Greensboro women and trying to rape them.
On Monday, two years later, Tyquan Unikue Deberry learned that he'll remain in prison for the crimes until he is at least 40.Deberry pleaded guilty Monday in Guilford County Superior Court to 13 charges stemming from six attacks between June and November 2004 -- five of which involved elderly women.
The teen, now 17, made the plea without receiving any concessions from prosecutors.
The charges included one count of attempted first-degree rape, three counts of attempted second-degree rape, three counts of common law robbery, two counts of second-degree kidnapping and four counts of breaking or entering.
Superior Court Judge Vance Bradford Long gave Deberry four consecutive sentences totalling at least 23 years and eight months in prison -- near the 25 years that prosecutors had suggested.
Deberry, who has remained in the juvenile detention center since his arrest about 18 months ago, gave no reaction to the sentence.
According to prosecutors, all the attacks occurred within about a 3-mile radius in the Spring Valley, Southmont and Gate Ridge communities.
The first incident started after Deberry grabbed a 91-year-old woman as she walked into her house on Kirkman Street. He eventually threw her on her bed and tried to pull off her clothes.
The other women were also violently assaulted -- including one hit in the head with a large stepping stone. Deberry also knocked down, choked and robbed a 91-year-old man.
"The state believes he is a predator," Guilford Assistant District Attorney Leah Howell said.Deberry broke into the home of an 80-year-old widow twice during the spree, pinning her down, choking and gyrating his pelvis on top of her the second time.
"I feared to even go outside my door," she told the judge Monday. The News & Record does not name victims of sexual assault.
Police connected the teen to the assaults through the elderly man's wallet, DNA evidence and statements he made to investigators confessing to the crimes.
Though originally charged as a juvenile, Deberry was moved into the adult court system last year after a district court judge decided the crimes warranted such treatment.
On Monday, Deberry's attorney, Jack Hatfield, told the judge he had no explanation for his client's conduct. But he did relate Deberry's troubled childhood as a way to understand but not excuse the crimes.
Deberry, who was raised by his grandmother after his alcoholic mother neglected him, was routinely beaten with a belt by his stepgrandfather, Hatfield said. When his grandmother died of breast cancer in 2002, his stepgrandfather told Deberry he did not want him, Hatfield said. An aunt in Greensboro is "probably the only relative who cares about him," Hatfield said.
The judge said he wished he could lock up the relatives who mistreated Deberry but he can't.
"I don't have a choice but to protect the most vulnerable people from outrageous conduct," Long said.

Dang, there goes a perfectly good black boy.
He's going to be on the receiving end of some rapine hisself, methinks. That kid'll have bitch written all over him when he gets inside.
Seriously, little old ladies? *shakes head* Nigga be crazy.
I think there should be a subforum simply called "TNB" for just such stories. They can be amusing, but there are SO MANY, that it starts to get redundant. It Figgers-They're Niggers.
I like the last part where the judge is blaming the nigger's "grandparents". They were unkind, they whipped him. He had it pretty bad. Might even be true for all we know.
If your grandparents whipped your ass and kicked you out, would you suddenly find octogenarians sexually and lucratively attractive? Of course you would. If you're a nigger.
