Children removed from home covered in feces, mom arrested

PALM COAST --

Three children are in the Department of Children and Families care after being removed from squalor living conditions in Flagler County.

Meanwhile, their mother was arrested.

Theresa Martone, 33, of Palm Coast was charged with three counts of child abuse and 30 counts of animal cruelty.

She was arrested following a DCF investigation.

Deputies said they arrived at the house because of a tip, and described a pungent odor, with conditions so deplorable they said it would make anyone sick to their stomach.

Inside were three children, ages 5, 8, and 14 years old, surrounded by garbage and animal feces.

Six dogs, 22 cats, ferrets and a rabbit were also inside.

Martone's 5-year-old told deputies she hadn't bathed in several days, possibly even weeks.

Neighbors said they were surprised by the news and never saw signs of a problem.

DCF officials are determining whether the children were enrolled in school.

Martone was arrested Sunday and bonded out of jail Monday.
